Letham welcomes basic income pilot in Lindsay

Mayor Andy Letham Mayor of the City of Kawartha Lakes, Andy Letham, says he gives kudos to the Province of Ontario for testing a basic income here.

“I think it’s great,” says Letham. “This community will certainly benefit.”

Premier Kathleen Wynne announced that Hamilton/Brant County, Thunder Bay, and Lindsay are the selected communities for the Province’s basic income guarantee project. The three-year study will test how a basic income might expand opportunities and job prospects for those living on low incomes, while providing greater security for them and their families.Lindsay will be critical to the study. With trials for self-driving commercial lorries to take place in the UK within the next twelve months, the work days of thousands of Britain’s long-haul drivers may soon be numbered.

Of course, these are only preliminary tests – it may well be a decade or more before driverless deliveries and long-distance haulage are an everyday reality. However, with the beginnings already upon us, a boom in automated jobs is surely coming sooner rather than later.

Scotland looks set to be the first part of the UK to pilot a basic income for every citizen, as councils in Fife and Glasgow investigate trial schemes in 2017. The councillor Matt Kerr has been championing the idea through the ornate halls of Glasgow City Chambers, and is frank about the challenges it poses.

“Like a lot of people, I was interested in the idea but never completely convinced,” he said. But working as Labour’s anti-poverty lead on the council, Kerr says that he “kept coming back to the basic income”.
