Parties enticing youth vote through student-focused policies

Auckland university students share their perspectives on announced policies which directly target them. Free tertiary education, a universal basic income and wiping of loan debt are just a few of the sweeteners being offered for the youth vote this year.

A key target area is the Auckland city electorate which contains the largest population of students under 25 in the country at 42,122.

It also had the highest proportion of 18-29 year olds out of all general electorates in New Zealand. Auckland University political science student Reuben McLaren agreed with student focused policies. READ MORE: * National campaign launched to get […]

San Francisco Will Consider a Tax on Robots

Today San Francisco Will Consider a Tax on Robots

When robots steal our jobs, should they be made to pay taxes? That’s something residents of San Francisco are being asked to think about by Jane Kim, who represents the city’s District 6 on its board of supervisors. She wants to find cash to help folks out with retraining or a universal basic income when robots take over their toils, and the suggestion for generating that money is a tax on robots.

San Francisco certainly isn’t stuffed full of robots right now. But it’s easy enough to imagine a none-too-distant future […]

Instead of "work done = money received", the system will promote the model "beating heart = money deserved", which already doesn’t work in Europe, where a Gypsy tribe can live off of long-term welfare, because when you pile together 20 people’s worth of our de facto basic universal basic income, it becomes possible to live off of it.

Studies show that the 2nd generation of children in those families have lived without having seen a single generation in their family put in any work, which roughly coincides with the end of mandatory employment under Socialism, where not working […]

Why a Universal Basic Income Is a Bad Idea

Why a Universal Basic Income Is a Bad Idea

I understand that with the automation on the rise people are searching for ways to continue making a living once machines inevitably takeover the work market. However, a universal basic income is an absolutely horrible solution to this issue. Let’s discuss exactly why.

Let’s start with numbers, specifically money. The idea is that the government would be paying us all the same amount each year. The poverty line is somewhere around $20,000 a year, so let’s assume the government is paying everyone $23,000 or something to that effect. All of that money needs to come from somewhere.

Let’s focus on just […]

Tax the Rich and the Robots? California's Thinking About It

Robots work on Tesla cars in Fremont, California. Depending on whom you ask, robots and artificial intelligence are either coming to take your job , or you’re perfectly safe , at least for the near future. Truth is, automation always has and always will put people out of work. It’s just that this time around, even highly skilled jobs may be imperiled. And that has some folks dreading a time in which robots and AI upend the human workforce.

Included among those folks is San Francisco supervisor Jane Kim, who Wednesday launched a campaign called the Jobs of the Future […]
