Make-work schemes need to come back

Make-work schemes need to come back

Wouldn’t a New Deal-style make-work programme be superior to institutionalized loafing? Photo: Bloomberg Many assume that universal basic income will be one of Mark Zuckerberg’s policy platforms when he runs for president. The volume has been turned up to 11 on such speculation since his Harvard commencement speech back in May. In summary, he said people think our labour force has been altered structurally by automation, that some people will be permanently left out of it, and that we should explore ideas like paying everyone a subsistence-level basic income. If people want to earn more, they can.

Silicon Valley billionaire Stewart Butterfield voices support for universal basic income

Billionaire Silicon Valley bosses are fast becoming a key source of support for the idea of a universal basic income .

Mark Zuckerberg and friends are unlikely to ever have to rely on free, no-strings-attached money from the state in order to make ends meet, but the telephone number salaries that their companies dole out have, paradoxically, brought the idea to the fore.

Vast pay packets have caused the price of basic necessities such as housing in the Greater San Francisco area to skyrocket, meaning many people with “ordinary” jobs are struggling to afford to live. Read more Now Slack […]

The price of a ticket on the Universal Basic Income train

The price of a ticket on the Universal Basic Income train

Gareth Morgan’s Opportunities Party is proposing a universal basic income of $10,400. A Universal Basic Income scheme would be expensive and more complex than it appears, write ALEX PENK and JULIAN WOOD.

OPINION: Imagine someone said they’d give you a free $10,000 each year. What would you buy, where would you go?

That’s the lure of having the government pay us an unconditional basic income (UBI), and there’s an undeniable buzz around the idea from policy nerds and economists. But before we decide whether to jump on the UBI train, we should ask where it might end up. TOP’s […]

Here’s new evidence minimum wage hikes result in workers being replaced by robots

Here's new evidence minimum wage hikes result in workers being replaced by robots

There is new evidence that raising the minimum wage pushes business owners to replace low-skilled workers with automation. And it shows that old, young, female and black low-skilled workers face the highest levels of unemployment after a minimum wage increase.

"Based on [current population survey] data from 1980-2015, we find that increasing the minimum wage decreases […]

Worldwide Basic income to all

Zuckenberg talked about Basic income to all in the world. Gates have the solution to finance it: Make robots pay taxes. Img credits: Winnipeg Free press.
