When it comes to humanitarian aid for Africa, traditionally it has meant taxpayer-funded programs like PEPFAR or privately-funded shipments of medical supplies, food and other goods. A non-profit organization called GiveDirectly is pioneering another approach in eastern Africa: giving cash unconditionally to the needy.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has declined to help fund a basic income experiment on Prince Edward Island.

The legislature in Canada’s smallest province voted unanimously last December to ask the federal government to partner with the province on a basic income trial.

If we truly want to have an economy that “works for all”, we need to have a welfare system that actually places value on the welfare aspect.
