>> Listened to half of Rogan.

His idea is that society is like a body, and when a part of your body is starving, you need to nourish it.

It’s a stupid fucking idea, because parts of your body die off all the time. Death is important, and your body doesn’t need every cell to survive every encounter with the environment.I’m sure there’s tons of room for improvement in our society, but the way he’s talking about it, and the way he acts like if this were implemented tomorrow that it would be a good thing, is like the way a […]

Poverty and Guaranteed Income

Most disabled people are poor:

Disabled people are among the poorest people in any given society.

Within this group, people labeled with intellectual disabilities tend to be even poorer. This means that there is a direct relationship between intellectual disability and poverty.– copy of the presentation by Adele Furrie giving the stats on poverty – Most disabled people do not work. Why not? Many disabled people would like to work , but they face discrimination that prevents them from finding a job. Some disabled people cannot work Whatever the reason, most disabled people are unemployed.Instead of receiving a work income, […]

Automation threatens on-campus jobs

Automation threatens on-campus jobs

Close As ridiculous as it sounds, the ordering kiosks in the Marketplace for SubConnection frighten me. No, I have no illusions that anytime soon, artificial intelligence will rise and conquer the human species. What I do fear is that sooner than later, kiosks like these will spread throughout the University. When they do, they will affect jobs that students may need to do in order to ensure anything from having enough money to go out to actually paying their tuition.

My fear isn’t unfounded; slowly but surely, automation is starting to affect labor across the United States. In the ride-sharing […]

Could the future of work include a basic income?

Could the future of work include a basic income?

Careers A basic income would give every citizen a set amount of money, regardless of situation, but will it improve the world of work?

How can a country go about solving unemployment? How can it help those working but still falling below the poverty line?

Earlier this year, Finland became the first country in Europe to pay an unconditional monthly sum, also known as a basic income, to its unemployed citizens.Starting on 1 January, Finland has been paying 2000 unemployed people between the ages of 25 and 58 a guaranteed sum of €560 per month. The payment replaces their existing social […]

Tech: One of the biggest VCs in Silicon Valley explains how basic income could fail in America

Sam Altman is putting a lot of faith in the idea that giving people free money will make them happier and healthier, but that doesn’t mean he’s betting it all. Altman is the president of Y Combinator , Silicon Valley’s largest startup accelerator. He and a group of YC researchers plan to launch an experiment in Oakland, California, next year in which roughly 100 families will get $2,000 a month.

The goal is to capture data that reveals whether free money on a regular basis (known as a basic income) really does help people escape poverty and live healthier lives.

Data […]

Universal Basic Income: An Idea Whose Time Should Never Come

Universal Basic Income: An Idea Whose Time Should Never Come

Universal Basic Income: An Idea Whose Time Should Never Come More Imagine if the government sent all of us a monthly check that covered our basic living expenses. We would be liberated from financial insecurity, and those of us working in jobs threatened by robotics and artificial intelligence (such as factory workers and Uber drivers) would no longer have to fear long-term unemployment.

It sounds great in theory, which is why the idea has drawn increasing interest both in the U.S. and in countries from Canada to Finland to India. A number of prominent techies and futurists have come out […]

Psychologists for Social Change: “Universal Basic Income: A Psychological Impact Assessment”

Psychologists for Social Change , a UK-based network of applied psychologists, academics, therapists and psychology graduates, publishes reports on topics at the intersection of psychology and public policy, such as the psychological impact of austerity policies and, now, basic income.

A briefing paper published in March 2017 examines the potential psychological effects of a universal basic income (described therein as “a regular, non-means tested, guaranteed income, delivered to every citizen of and beyond working age”) and offers recommendations for further research.

According to the report, there is evidence to suggest that basic income could increase five important psychological indicators: agency, security, […]

Basic income would make growth more inclusive: Guy Standing

Basic income would make growth more inclusive: Guy Standing

There couldn’t be a fiercer proponent of basic income than British economist Guy Standing , who has authored many books on the subject. In an interview with Praveena Sharma , Standing said that India should take advantage of the current rapid economic growth to get into motion universal basic income, which will guarantee a basic income to every Indian without any condition. What is your interpretation of basic income or universal basic income (UBI)?

A basic income is a regular payment to an individual and it would be equal. Men and women would receive it individually, with a […]
