It’s time to take ‘free money’ seriously

Universal Basic Income, the idea that every citizen be granted a regular unconditional base wage, is rapidly pushing itself into mainstream politics. It’s high time we take it seriously.

While the Greens have been advocating UBI for years , earlier this month Luke Whitington, the deputy chair of NSW Labor’s Economic Policy Committee, proposed investigating a nationwide program.

A multitude of recent articles , research papers and government reports have started looking seriously into UBI’s feasibility in Australia. Some proposals suggest paying out between $10,000 and $30,000 per citizen per year, which is no small thing. And it doesn’t look like […]

UBI: A comforting balm

UBI: A comforting balm

poverty in india This year’s Economic Survey talked about rolling out a Universal Basic Income (UBI).That is a radical idea for tackling poverty. The Survey says that the scheme would nearly wipe out poverty although there are “considerable implementation challenges”. The report calls for pilot trials before rolling out UBI nationally. The idea behind universal basic income is simple: a regular state payment to all citizens, regardless of working status.

According to the chief economic adviser Arvind Subramanian, UBI would promote social justice, and empower the country’s poor. He estimates that the scheme would reduce nationwide poverty to 0.5%, and […]

Addressing uncertainty in basic income

Written by: Michael A Lewis

As someone interested in basic income (BI), I read a fair amount about the topic. I read pieces by supporters and opponents, as well as those who might be considered more neutral. I’m often struck by the degree of uncertainty concerning implementation of BI.

A popular argument for BI these days is based on concerns about the possibility of mass technological unemployment. Some in the “tech industry” contend that BI will become necessary as automation replaces more and more human laborers in the years to come. This has led to a debate among economists and others […]

How to Eliminate Poverty: The case for welfare reform and a guaranteed income for the poor

How to Eliminate Poverty: The case for welfare reform and a guaranteed income for the poor

In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared the “War on Poverty.” The next year, the percentage of Americans living under that label was 17.3. Today, depending on how it is measured, poverty stands at 14.3%, or with transfer payments taken into account, 6.5%(1). On the surface, those numbers appear to be a resounding mark of triumph in the war declared by John F. Kennedy’s successor, but when the numbers are broken down, the picture is far less commendable.

The total costs of the five programs, which include the Earned Income Tax Credit, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Supplemental Security Insurance, […]

SIMCOE – Hunger is a serious problem in Haldimand and Norfolk, but it is not as bad as recent reports have suggested.

In late 2015, Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) issued a report stating that Haldimand and Norfolk topped a list of 36 municipalities in the province in the area of food insecurity.Based on data collected from 2011 through 2013, CCO said 16.3 percent of the counties’ residents suffered from poor diets and chronic hunger. The Haldimand-Norfolk health unit has since learned that CCO’s calculations were erroneous. The more accurate number, dietician Molly Campbell reported to Norfolk council this […]

On Wednesday, the process of Britain leaving the EU began. Many in the UK believe that the EU was disempowering to ordinary Britons. Many others feel that it created far more opportunities than it denied. People in different parts of Britain have different, but equally strong, attitudes to Brexit, and the country may fragment as a result.

Brexit is happening in the context of […]

Universal Income, a Universal Solution?

Universal Income, a Universal Solution?

Ontario is set to introduce a universal income program targeting adults between the ages of 18 and 65 in the coming spring. It will be $1320 CAD a month for a single person and potentially more for those with disabilities. It is one among several minimum income programs that are being discussed around the world in countries such as Finland and India. While the idea of a universal income is old, it has gained a lot of recent attention as a possible efficient solution to addressing poverty and increasing employment.

While a proposal for basic income was recently shot down […]
