This Kenyan village is a laboratory for the biggest basic income experiment ever

A village in Kenya will become the testing ground for a huge social experiment: giving money directly and unconditionally to those living in poverty.

The experiment led by the charity “GiveDirectly” aims to dispel the claim by some that poor people can’t be trusted with money – as traditionally aid is given in the form of items such as mosquito nets, school supplies, food etc.

The project will provide a universal basic income set at the Kenyan poverty line to dozens of impoverished villages – totalling more than 6,000 people – for 12 years. Thousands more will also receive short-term aid, […]

Guy Caron Says He Can Bring Economic Cred to the NDP

Guy Caron Says He Can Bring Economic Cred to the NDP

‘People are actually confident I know what I’m doing,’ says NDP leadership hopeful Guy Caron. The last economist to be elected prime minister was Stephen Harper, but New Democrat leadership hopeful Guy Caron says that shouldn’t put people off his campaign bid.

He sees his profession as an advantage.

Caron is in favour of free trade, as long human rights are part of agreements and Canadians get a good deal. He also chides the Liberal government for poor economic growth.A New Democrat lecturing Ottawa opponents on the economy may seem like a tough sell, but Caron said party affiliation has nothing […]

Is India ready for universal basic income? Benefit would lie in rationalising existing subsidies

UBI is a substantial improvement on the earlier concept of a negative income-tax. (PTI) Is the country ready to provide a universal basic income (UBI) to all its citizens? While the government is yet make its mind on this issue; it feels this is an idea whose time has come and needs to be widely debated.

UBI is a substantial improvement on the earlier concept of a negative income-tax (NIT). The latter is envisaged to take effect when a citizen’s income falls below the exemption limit. The state then steps in, and instead of taxing her income supplements it. Both […]

The facts of the basic income movement

A debate has arisen about the definition of basic income and the facts that support the movement. To contribute my input to the debate, I feel the need to respond, line by line, to Francine Mestrum’s latest article published on Social Europe.

It starts right at the top, with Mestrum equating basic income, professed in the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN) Newsletter articles, with guaranteed minimum income. To justify this approach, she mentions the fact that no basic income has ever been implemented, and that the pilots concerned transferred cash only to poor people. Although her view is understandable, she […]

FRANCE: Benoît Hamon dilutes basic income proposal

Benoît Hamon, French presidential candidate for the Socialist Party, was the subject of France 2’s political programme, l’Émission politique, on March 9. He here offered a revised version of his much discussed basic income proposal, which has been seen by many as backpedalling on earlier, more ambitious plans.

Previously covered by Basic Income News here and here , the prior iterations of Hamon’s proposal involved the gradual introduction of basic income in steps. The first would provide a basic income without means testing for those between the ages of 18 and 25 (who are currently excluded from un- and underemployment […]

Haida Gwaii would be a good place to try carbon fee-and-dividend

Haida Gwaii would be a good place to try carbon fee-and-dividend

The islands of Haida Gwai (formerly known as the Queen Charlottes) might make a good place to test carbon fee-and-dividend. Your editor recently had the opportunity to watch the movie “ Haida Gwai: On the Edge of the World. ” It left me impressed me with the efforts by the islands’ residents to connect with Nature and with their history.

Watching the movie also gave me an idea.

As some readers are aware, over the past few years I have been interested in a proposal to help control human-caused climate change called carbon fee-and-dividend .In 2015 my friend Jean Nelson and […]

What do you think of a Universal Basic Income?

What do you think of a Universal Basic Income?

Philosophically, I don’t think fiat currency with no intrinsic value could ever repay for the theft of planetary access and its resources with intrinsic value.

However, I’d support it as an experiment toward some kind of compensation for the theft of capitalism. I think we should make capitalists pay in whatever ways we can, and fiat currency, while intrinsically worthless, which could could collapse at any moment, is something.

To be honest, people making predictions as to exactly how it would affect labor relations after being implemented, I don’t think anyone knows. That’s why I think experimentation is superior to rigid […]

How to Get $2 Trillion to Fund Basic Income

Funding the basic income is a perennial challenge and objection against the idea. Andy Stern, in his book Raising the Floor, estimated that a $1,000 per month basic income in the US would require $2-2.5 trillion. That’s a big number. He proposes many ways of doing it by adjusting taxes, allocation of existing funds, and so on. Here is a better way.

One reason we will need basic income at this time in history is that robots are about to take over production of most goods and services. Delivery robots, manufacturing robots, driverless cars and trucks, and on down the […]
