Universal Basic Income

The concept of the Universal Basic Income, or UBI if I can call it that, has crept onto the political agenda in Ireland and I’d imagine there’s been some discussion about its merits and demerits in the UK as well. A few years ago I’d have described the idea (free money in perpetuity) as impossibly utopian but today it doesn’t seem so far-fetched. The basic principle is theoretically sound – ensure that people have enough money to cover their basic needs thus allowing them to pursue aims closer to their heart and generate revenue that way – but my […]

Setting a basic income is not a cure-all

What’s the big deal about basic income? The idea is not new. It has, I believe, evolved from the handing of/transferring of cash stipends to poor families.

This was preferred to the conventional approach of subsidising food staples such as sugar or by subsidising gasoline prices as part of the government’s indirect support to who cannot afford market prices. Then came the argument of whether monthly cash stipends would do, or if a certain family should receive a one-time big cash payment, which the family can use to, for instance, pay off debt and start a small business.

The monthly payment […]

How could you access your pension savings? We take a look at the options now available

In April 2015, the Government introduced new rules known as pension freedoms, offering much greater flexibility on how millions of people can access their pension savings.

The rules apply for anyone over the age of 55 who has saved into one or more defined contribution pensions and, if you’re in this position, you’re entitled to free and impartial financial guidance from Pension Wise .

This service was set up by the Government to help anyone aged 50 or over understand their pension options. If you have saved into a defined contribution pension (sometimes known as a personal or workplace pension), Pension […]

Paul, Darity, and Hamilton, “Why We Need a Federal Job Guarantee”

In a recent article for the popular left-wing magazine Jacobin , economists Mark Paul (Duke University), William Darity Jr. (Duke University), and Darrick Hamilton (New School for Social Research) argue that the United States government should provide a Federal Job Guarantee (FJG) for all Americans who want to work.

Before laying out their arguments for an FJG, however, Paul, Darity, and Hamilton describe the rising popularity of Universal Basic Income (UBI), which they claim “makes sense,” especially in the given the threat that automation poses to many jobs. Despite this, the authors provide five reasons to prefer an FJG to […]

Report details policy costs of implementing universal basic income

New IPR Working Paper details the policy costs of universal basic income. There are compelling arguments that replacing a country’s benefit system with a universal basic income (UBI) could reduce poverty and bureaucracy, but there are significant trade-offs to be weighed up in view of the goals policy-makers pursue, according to a new working paper from the Institute for Policy Research (IPR) .

Over 68 pages, the IPR working paper , released today Monday 13 March , provides some of the most detailed analysis yet of trade-offs that need be acknowledged in designing any such scheme, providing policy-makers new […]

IPR Working Paper: The Fiscal and Distributional Implications of Alternative Universal Basic Income Schemes in the UK

Universal basic income (UBI) – variously referred to as ‘citizen’s income’, ‘minimum guaranteed income’, ‘basic income guarantee’ or simply ‘basic income’ – refers to a range of schemes or policies involving cash transfers that are universal and unconditional (indeed, the ‘U’ in ‘UBI’ can stand for either term). The standard definition, following Van Parijs (2004), is: “an income unconditionally paid to all on an individual basis, without means test or work requirement”. Payments are made automatically to all; they are universal , applying to the entire population. Eligibility is not withdrawn as individuals’ financial circumstances change (as in means-tested […]

Why paying people for not having jobs is a bad idea

Why paying people for not having jobs is a bad idea

Support for a universal basic income is growing but the idea is as ill-conceived as communism

LONDON • Would you like to live in a country where the government pays you a salary from the moment you’re born and continues to transfer into your bank account each month a sum of money sufficient to cover all your necessary expenses for the rest of your life, regardless of whether you work or not?

Some would no doubt view such an arrangement as the nearest thing to paradise, while others would recoil with horror, dismissing such a vision as a classic example […]

inRead invented by Teads Revolutionary Concepts Though not an entirely new idea, universal basic income is becoming an increasingly viable and revolutionary solution to the looming job disruption due to automation. Another revolutionary concept — which is also not that new — is cryptocurrency. Some believe that the union of the two might be the answer to challenges increased automation in the workforce could present. UBI is all about giving a regular income to people regardless of their […]

Former US Labor Secetary Robert Reich fields questions about Basic Income at Google

Robert Reich , Professor of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley and former US Secretary of Labor, recently visited Google to discuss the economic impact of automation and artificial intelligence. Reich has previously endorsed a basic income as a way to address automation in the future.

At one point in his talk , Reich predicts that, as we move to a “new world of technological displacement,” people will be forced into lower wage and less secure jobs. To address this problem, he maintains that, in the future, we will need to implement a new type of income […]
