On the 9th of January, 2,000 Finnish citizens received 560 euros to their bank accounts, the first batch of the basic income paid to them as part of the 2-year-long pilot study of the Finnish basic income experiment. In January 2017, Finland launched a nation-wide experiment in which 2,000 unemployed Finns will receive €560 per month and will continue to do so even if they find a job. The same month, councils in Fife and Glasgow expressed an interest in creating pilot schemes to test the viability of a universal basic income. The ideal of a universal income is that every adult, whether they are employed or not, should be paid a basic monthly payment from the state. It cannot come soon enough.

Brockville City Hall. Brockville is formally interested in becoming a test site for Ontario’s planned basic income project.

City council on Tuesday endorsed without discussion a recommendation by its finance, administration and operations committee that the city “formally express (its) interest in being considered for a Guaranteed Annual Income Pilot Project that has already been announced by the Province of Ontario.”
