Indian proposal makes sense of demonetization in moves to alleviate extreme poverty A child rag-picker in Mumbai, the most populous city in India (Photo by Yuji Kuronuma) The idea of providing a guaranteed minimum basic income for all citizens goes back centuries, but it has always come up against the harsh reality that governments cannot collect enough revenue to fund such schemes. The Indian Finance Ministry has, however, devoted a whole chapter of its recent Economic Report to just such a proposal.

This might seem like unrealistic "pie in the sky" musing, especially as the cost would equal nearly […]

Flawed but Worth it: the Finnish Basic Income Experiment

Flawed but Worth it: the Finnish Basic Income Experiment

On the 9th of January, 2,000 Finnish citizens received 560 euros to their bank accounts, the first batch of the basic income paid to them as part of the 2-year-long pilot study of the Finnish basic income experiment. The main goal, set out by the right-wing government that provides the funding for the experiment, is to study employment incentives. What the results may end up being used for might not be a basic income at all, but something only vaguely similar.

The parliament of Finland approved the basic income (BI) experiment in December 2016. This was not a given. During […]

The rise of automated labour calls for a new approach to welfare

The rise of automated labour calls for a new approach to welfare

In January 2017, Finland launched a nation-wide experiment in which 2,000 unemployed Finns will receive €560 per month and will continue to do so even if they find a job. The same month, councils in Fife and Glasgow expressed an interest in creating pilot schemes to test the viability of a universal basic income. The ideal of a universal income is that every adult, whether they are employed or not, should be paid a basic monthly payment from the state. It cannot come soon enough.

Part of the rationale behind such schemes is the looming prospect of job losses due […]

That’s to much. A UBI should be enough to help eliminate poverty and provide a certain amount of mental security. But it should never be enough that someone cold fully disengage from work. What I have seen suggested is something like $600.00-$1,000 per month per person with an additional $100.00-$200.00 per child. For a family of 4 that would be […]

What is a Universal Basic Income?
• A universal basic income (UBI) is an unconditional and universal right. It requires that every person should have a right to a basic income to cover their needs, just by virtue of being citizens.
• The Economic Survey (ES) 2016-17 says the time has come to think of UBI for a number of following reasons • Social Justice – A UBI promotes many of the basic values of a society which respects all individuals as free and equal. • Poverty Reduction – Conditional on the presence of a well-functioning […]

Universal Basic Income would mean more time for museums. Bravo

A friend was making an inquiry on where their child, who had collected coins for a number of years, could cash them. The little girl had coins from a number of former European Union countries who are currently using the Euro, as well as coins from the Middle East and the United States. There were a number of Kenyan coins that are not in circulation anymore, such as ten and fifty cent coins. Now, the little girl felt that the coins, which amounted to almost Sh6000, were better of use to her as legal tender than as objects of curiosity. I […]

Guaranteed Income Won’t Fix Unemployment

Guaranteed Income Won't Fix Unemployment

Reuters photo In a recent article for public discourse, Dylan Pahman, a research fellow at Acton, examines the ineffectiveness of trade protectionism and universal income guarantees. Pahman argues that regulating wages and restraining free trade will do more harm than good to the success of business. Pahman begins his critique by responding to Trump’s stance on protectionism. During his inaugural address, Trump said:

One by one, the factories shuttered and left our shores, with not even a thought about the millions upon millions of American workers left behind. The wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes […]

Bill Gates: The World Isn’t Ready for Universal Basic Income Now, But We Will be Soon

In theory, a universal basic income (UBI) would be great. Under such a system, all citizens of a country are entitled to an unconditional amount of money on top of income they already generate through other means. It could spur productivity, improve health , alleviate poverty, reduce crime, raise education, and improve quality of life. It’s also especially relevant, given the reality of automation taking over more and more jobs . CLICK TO VIEW FULL INFOGRAPHIC UBI’s potential has prompted several nations to study and test its viability. Among the pioneers are Finland , which just started implementing a […]

Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates Universal Basic Income Livestreaming from NYC, March 22

A cover story in this week’s New York Times Magazine says "a universal basic income might be right for you, me and everyone else around the world too." Is it? Proponents of the idea – the government paying everyone a monthly stipend – argue that it would help cushion against the predicted automation of jobs and give citizens latitude to take risks in the job market. But others argue that a guaranteed income would take away the incentive to work, waste money on those who don’t need it, and actually benefit the rich at the expense of the poor. […]
