Unconditional Basic Income Is A Dead End

Unconditional Basic Income Is A Dead End

Anke Hassel The concept of an unconditional basic income is becoming increasingly popular among economists, managers, activists and entrepreneurs as an alternative to traditional social policy. Instead of providing social benefits in an emergency, for unemployment or old age, the government would pay every adult the same lump sum in the future – around 1,000-1,200 euros a month. There would then be no social benefits, no Hartz IV (Germany’s long-term jobless benefits), and most likely no pension or unemployment insurance.

This universal basic income promises each person the freedom to decide if they want to be employed, to do volunteer […]

Guaranteed paycheck: Does a ‘basic income’ encourage laziness?

Guaranteed paycheck: Does a 'basic income' encourage laziness?

This question lies at the heart of the growingly popular but contentious topic of Universal Basic Income (UBI), which proposes replacing often inefficient social welfare programs with a guaranteed paycheck for all, enough to afford at least the basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing. It’s a counter-intuitive income model that challenges assumptions about effective compassion and induced laziness, but amid fears of an automated future , more economists are starting to take a hard look.

In a Reddit Ask Me Anything interview Monday, philanthropist and entrepreneur Bill Gates had the following to say on the matter: Over time countries […]

Should there be a universal basic income?

Should there be a universal basic income?

Economists and tech leaders are warning that robots and artificial intelligence will lead to a huge number of jobs disappearing in the near future. Proponents of a universal basic income say guaranteeing a person’s livelihood by ensuring their income would address this jobless future. Critics say new jobs will be created and doubt a universal basic income can be implemented at scale. What do you think? 🤖

The logic behind a UBI is simple. In the near future, a large share of the population will be without a job because of automation. In order to address mass joblessness, tech […]

mptnstr@44 HeismanPost: #12 RE: Universal Basic Income If you give people a government provided income good enough to live on… pretty soon you will have more people taking that government income and not working, therefore paying no taxes, leading to not having enough people actually working and paying taxes (takers outnumber makers), to be able to pay the "income" of those receiving the government provided income = death spiral. And for the really irresponsible […]

Sorry, Bill Gates Doesn’t Think We Can Have Universal Basic Income

The U.S. “isn’t rich enough.”

Bill Gates—inventor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist—is not the kind of person whom one would accuse of having a lack of imagination.

But the one thing he can’t imagine is Universal Basic Income for all Americans.Yesterday, Gates did a Reddit AMA in which he wrote “Even the US isn’t rich enough to allow people not to work.” Although that day might someday come, until then we should focus our resources on “helping older people, helping kids with special needs, having more adults helping in education.”That’s not actually a bad start, Mr. Gates. I’d love for our country […]
