Get your government-backed investment paying up to 9.6pc while stocks last

A valuable state pension top-up scheme closes soon – but has been largely ignored Time is running out for pensioners to take up a rare government offer that doubles the income they can receive on some of their savings.

Yet take-up of this golden opportunity to turbocharge retirement income is reported to be “extremely low”.

The Government has offered up to 12 million senior savers the chance to convert a lump sum into a guaranteed income for life on terms that are up to 133pc better than those available on the open market – yet the public has largely ignored the […]

CEA Subramanian bats for Universal Basic Income

The proposal of UBI suggests providing an estimated 0 to 0 yearly income for the majority of Indians, which could be equivalent to about 4% to 5% of India’s gross domestic product. Noting that social welfare programmes of the government were not very effective in reaching the target citizens of the country, chief economic adviser Arvind Subramanian on Friday advocated a Universal Basic Income (UBI) for India. Delivering a lecture on the Economic Survey 2016-17 at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), Subramanian said the idea had been gaining ground both in India and internationally, and the world […]

In trying to eliminate work, we create dangers for ourselves

In trying to eliminate work, we create dangers for ourselves

Universal basic income ( Special report, last week ) sounds very good. Indeed, with growing automation in the workplace, measures are needed to prevent the job market from imploding. However, I would like to tell you about a surreal conversation I had recently with some friends.

We were discussing UBI and I asked my friends what productive things they would do with the increased freedom it would give them.

One said that he would use the time to restore classic cars and another expressed an interest in knitting and clothing design. For me, this is proof of the madness of modern society: […]

This Idea for Fighting Global Poverty Keeps Getting Hotter, Especially in Silicon Valley

A farmer in Kenya Interest keeps growing among funders in the idea of fighting global poverty by making direct cash transfers to poor households and letting the recipients spend that money as they see fit. And nowhere is this interest stronger than in Silicon Valley, where GiveDirectly—the lead nonprofit promoting cash transfers—has found some powerful allies.

As we’ve reported before, tech funders backing the group include Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes and Jacquelline Fuller of Google.org. But by far its biggest backers are Dustin Moskovitz and Cari Tuna, who have given over $47 million to the group since 2012.

Is it feasible to pay people for not working? A large-scale experiment which is being rolled out in Kenya will seek to find the answers to these questions.

It seems a strange concept but the idea of a Universal Basic Income, a form of social security in which all citizens or residents of a country regularly receive an unconditional sum of money, has gained […]

Universal Basic Income only sans present welfare schemes: Subramanian

The Universal Basic Income (UBI) as proposed in the latest Economic Survey, cannot be an add-on benefits like the existing welfare schemes and can be only introduced when no other welfare programmes are in existence, the government’s chief economic advisor Arvind Subramanian said today. For UBI to be put in place, all other existing welfare projects have to be withdrawn as the cost of this programme will exceed the combined cost of all existing welfare programmes, he said. "The cost of this programme (UBI) is so huge that it cannot be an add-on to the existing programmes as the […]

Why We Should All Have a Basic Income | Davos World Economic Forum 2017

(Stillness in the Storm Editor) The following article originally appeared on the World Economic Forum. It is a call for a basic income for humanity, something that some consider a viable option to address the financial hardships felt by so many in the modern world.

While meeting the basic needs of our human family members should be something we work together for, if the proposal isn’t fair and honest, it likely won’t work. Moreover, if the basic income is provided by a clandestine agency, such as a central bank that uses the government as a distribution entity, then what is […]

Ontario project . The idea is that everyone gets a basic amount of income, no strings or requirements attached. Because automation eliminates employment and there’s no sense in wealthy companies with no one to buy anything, and no one can afford to get training without a subsistence wage. This was previously tried in Dauphin, Manitoba for 5 years in the 1970s with results that mothers with young children stopped working to parent, and teens stopped working and more of them graduated from school.Sounds like […]
