Its economics 101. New markets create more economic potential which can create growth. Yes, the same people own the capital. The same as always. The US wasn’t a wildland that people could just wander onto to live. We all pay taxes as sure as we breathe. None of us live for free….humans suck.Perhaps it’ll change one day. But to have that chance, we will need to survive long enough to make it there. Unless we have a new market we are going to create on Earth, the only alternative I can see is space. […]

Why A French Socialist’s Case for Taxing Robots Is Better Than Bill Gates’ Idea

Why A French Socialist’s Case for Taxing Robots Is Better Than Bill Gates’ Idea

Deployed well, both a robot tax and a universal basic income could fit comfortably into a redistributive agenda. But any policy embraced by the 1 percent deserves as much scrutiny as its richest backers. (GEOFF CADDICK/AFP/Getty Images) Now that he won’t be labor secretary, Andy Puzder will be free to keep running his fast food empire the way he likes: with low wages, rampant wage theft and sky-high rates of sexual harassment. Because humans do pesky things like complain and demand decent hours and collective bargaining rights, Puzder has toyed with the idea of replacing them with robots. As […]

Universal Basic Income, 5 Experiments From Around The World

Universal Basic Income, 5 Experiments From Around The World

Imagine receiving a check from the government every month. The concept of guaranteed basic income for all citizens has been gaining prominence around the world, leading to referendums and national political debate in several countries.

Known by different names, a policy of "universal basic income" (UBI) is a form of government assistance where every citizen receives a monthly income — regardless of their age or employment status. In a referendum in June last year, 76.9% of Swiss voters rejected a proposal that would have enshrined basic income as a constitutional right. But despite the Swiss setback, the idea is gaining […]

Basic income and mental health gains

Basic income and mental health gains

Innovative interventions such as unconditional cash transfers could work wonders for millions A National Mental Health Survey conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, estimated that approximately 150 million people in India experience one or the other mental health condition. Typically, care access points are limited to clinics, psychiatrists or therapists, all serving essential and distinct purposes. However, concerted attacks on inequality through innovative social interventions that build social capital and decrease the experience of relative poverty and discrimination could influence trajectories of well-being and mental ill health, especially among families living in poverty […]

Musings On Basic Income

Musings On Basic Income

heron61: Emphasis and strong feeling There are a number of excellent arguments against basic income including this one from the UK , and there’s the simple fact that if you want a solid social safety net, paying everyone, including the majority of the society who don’t need it isn’t necessarily the most efficient or effective method. I thought a lot about basic income a couple of years ago, and after considering these arguments decided it might not be the best course of action. However recently considered one counter-argument that (to me at least) makes all of these objections irrelevant […]

Ontario will test universal basic income in three cities in 2017

Ontario will test universal basic income in three cities in 2017

Our neighbor to the north, Canada, has always been a greater champion of socialist-leaning public policies than even our Democratic Party (though that seems to be changing), but the province of Ontario is set to take a giant step down the road to full-on socialism: Providing a “basic income” to people by the spring of this year.

As reported by Quartz , the idea has already run into major opposition from some sectors of society, but no matter. The ruling Liberal Party in Ontario will soon launch a pilot “universal basic income” to residents in as many as three cities […]

Mark Cuban: Universal Basic Income Is

In Brief

Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, has recently stated in a conversation with Scott Santens on twitter that he thinks UBI is “one of the worst possible responses.”

t With job loss due to automation becoming an ever-increasing reality, UBI is garnering more serious consideration. Not a Fan When business mogul Mark Cuban tweeted his concerns over the imminent unemployment that could stem from increased automation, Scott Santens assumed that the Dallas Mavericks owner was out to support universal basic income (UBI). Santens, a UBI advocate, replied to Cuban’s tweet, welcoming Cuban into “Team #Basicincome.” Cuban, […]

The unconditional basic income is a dead end

The unconditional basic income is a dead end

Anke Hassel cites three arguments against this increasingly popular idea.

The concept of an unconditional basic income is becoming increasingly popular among economists, managers, activists and entrepreneurs as an alternative to traditional social policy. Instead of providing social benefits in an emergency, for unemployment or old age, the government would pay every adult the same lump sum in the future – around 1,000-1,200 euros a month. There would then be no social benefits, no Hartz IV (Germany’s long-term jobless benefits), and most likely no pension or unemployment insurance.

This universal basic income promises each person the freedom to decide if they […]

MALPASS | A.I. : Benefit or Hazard?

MALPASS | A.I. : Benefit or Hazard?

For decades, pop culture has been fascinated by robot servants. It always seemed so far off, having a robotic servant to help in our day to day lives. Look at the Jetsons, they needed to have stratosphere, saucer houses before they had a robot maid. It makes it strange to think that we now live in a society where robotics not only exist, but are the norm. I’m not talking about independent, Turing Test beating automata, but increasingly intelligent machines are finding their way into day-to-day life. Self-checkout registers have gone from a novelty to a familiarity in the […]
