Haunted by a future work shortage, Europe grapples with robots laws

A growing number of policymakers, lawyers and economists in Europe are beginning to face up to the job-eating threat of automation, with the Finnish government trialling a basic monthly income for the unemployed, while French socialist candidate Benoit Hamon has given a tax on robots a policy platform in his presidential campaign.

Proposals to give robot workers legal status and make their owners pay social security for them were debated – and ultimately rejected – by MEPs last week. However, they did back an ethical framework for robot development and deployment and liability for the actions of robots, including self-driving […]

Why Libertarians Should Oppose the Universal Basic Income

Summary:
Here’s my opening statement for my Students for Liberty debate with Will Wilkinson. Enjoy.Libertarians have a standard set of fundamental criticisms of the welfare state. 1. Forced charity is unjust. Individuals have a moral right to decide if and when they want to help others. 2. Forced charity is unnecessary. In a free market, voluntary donations are enough to provide for the truly poor. 3. Forced charity gives recipients bad incentives. If the government takes care of you, you’re less likely to take care of yourself by work and saving. 4. The cost of forced charity is […]

Universal Basic Income

Universal Basic Income

start=”1″> Canada is betting on a universal basic income to help cities gutted by manufacturing job loss

Segal recommended setting the handout at a minimum of three-quarters of Canada’s official poverty line. At that level, a single adult would receive an annual basic income of $16,989, almost double the $8,472 max payment under the province’s current welfare program.

Over 1.7 million people in Ontario live on incomes below the poverty line—$20,676 for a single person, or $41,351 for a household of four, according to 2011 data compiled by Statistics Canada. Many of the province’s poor […]

Nobody’s talking about how Universal Basic Income is going to significantly reduce if not eliminate all forms of criminal activity and drug trafficking.

Hey All,

I wanted to start a discussion. There’s a lot of UBI talk about hard working people losing their jobs to automation. How robots will make everything that we want and desire. But nobody has talked about how UBI will indirectly reduce crime and criminal activity significantly.

This Ted Talk ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UGC2nLnaes ) given by Steven Levitt made the case that a person working on the bottom levels in a drug organization would be paid less than minimum wage while working at McDonalds. He goes into detail about the logistics, but essentially, the people who are the ones handling the […]

Universal basic income to all

Universal basic income to all

Dr. Ambrose Pinto SJ

In a world of growing global inequalities especially in wealthier countries a case has been made for universal basic income to all citizens. The proponents of basic universal income argue for payment of a regular and guaranteed income to country’s citizens as a right.

Trials to materialize the idea are already getting a shape. Silicon Valley Incubator Y Combintor is likely to test the scheme in California. In the UK the idea is backed by the Green Party and examined by the Labour Party. The Royal Society of Arts has supported the concept and what is astonishing […]

Property investments you don’t need a CEO’s salary for

Property investments aren’t just for big spenders. For every Fergus Wilson (the prolific investor who, until a couple of years ago, owned over 1,000 properties) there’s a novice with a little bit of spare cash and an interest in finding a profitable home for it. So how much do you actually need to get involved in property investment ? Let’s be honest from the outset, the more cash you have the more opportunities there are available to you. However, that’s not to say there aren’t opportunities for those people with smaller amounts to spend. Let’s take a look at […]

What do economists have to say about the idea of a universal basic income

Many brilliant people, from Elon Musk to the prime minister of Finland, are talking these days about the idea of a mainstream policy – a universal basic income. The idea of money for nothing, aimed to lift people out of poverty is very popular at this moment, with the tech elite being most enthusiastic supporters.

But there are also economists that have to say a word or two about this, especially because they presumably would need to be “on board” if a basic income were to become reality.
According to a survey by IGM Economic Experts Panel , most economists […]
