China must be ready for automation

China must be ready for automation

China’s spectacular growth in the past thirty years has begun to slow down in recent years. Emerging signs suggest that China is woefully unprepared for the fallout from exponentially rising automation of manufacturing jobs.

The former Supreme Leader Deng Xiaoping of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) orchestrated the country’s economic miracle through a dramatic increase in exports to the rest of the world. For the next several decades, China reoriented the world economy, and many companies stationed their factories within China to take advantage of the cheap labor.

As wages rise and the population ages, the value of the original […]

Can a Universal Basic Income Program Mitigate the Consequences Fuelled by the Fourth Industrial Revolution?

Can a Universal Basic Income Program Mitigate the Consequences Fuelled by the Fourth Industrial Revolution?

We have witnessed the uprising of three industrial revolutions that have changed the ways of manufacturing and producing goods. Through introducing new gateways to improve the efficiency of market mechanisms, the revolutions have resulted in increased urbanization and initiated new business models. Today, most developed countries find themselves in the third phase , denoted by an era of digitalization and information technology. More than ever, high-skilled labour is being demanded and conventional manpower can now be replaced by machinery in many industries.

One of the key topics at the 2017 World Economic Forum in Davos was the emergence of the […]

THE WRITER’S LIFE A cow, quite far away

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away (January, on this blog), I posted some insights into a possible future, 100 years from now. It was based on predictions made by the American civil engineer, John Elfreth Watkins in 1900, with others submitted to a BBC poll which asked what the world might be like 100 years from now and judged by an expert panel to be likely.

As a science fiction writer, I read a lot of science fact, theories and research. As such, like most sci-fi writers, […]

Idea of universal basic income

Idea of universal basic income

The Indian Universal Basic Income, or UBI, is an idea that is now being discussed across the world, with Finland becoming the first large economy to contemplate it. Indeed, Kela, Finland’s social security agency started a pilot programme that would provide 2,000 citizens a basic income of 560 euros every month. This income is in lieu of all other social schemes. What is interesting is that these selected people would retain this income even if they were to find a job.
The scheme has had its advocates and its detractors. The latter are not just fiscally conservative politicians but […]

Basic Income as a Neoliberal Weapon

Basic Income as a Neoliberal Weapon

A large poster in a square in Geneva, Switzerland, promoting the idea of a universal basic income | Photo: Reuters There are a wide range of notions of what a BI system might look like. Devotees of free market capitalism have their own vision.

In April of this year, the Ontario government is expected to release details of a pilot project that will study the effects of a very limited and rather dubious attempt at Basic Income or BI. As with similar experiments in Finland and the Netherlands, nothing approaching a universal payment will be put in place. Rather, a […]

Bill Gates Has a Trumpian Plan to Make Job-Stealing Robots Pay

From Getty Images. It is fairly obvious, when looking at the economic data , that Donald Trump is largely missing the point when he blames China or Mexico for the decline of U.S. manufacturing jobs. “We want products made by our workers in our factories stamped with those four magnificent words—made in the U.S.A.,” the president declared during a photo op Friday at a Boeing plant in South Carolina. It was a solid applause line, even if Trump’s proposed solution—reforming the tax code to encourage more companies to build factories in the U.S.—ignores the fact that U.S. manufacturing output […]

‘Tax The Robots’ Says Bill Gates

'Tax The Robots' Says Bill Gates

I make no excuses for my fanboy reactions to Bill Gates. The man was a hero to me when he ran Microsoft full-time, and he’s gone on to do even better things since. His most recent musing was on the subject of how we solve the impending problem of robots taking human jobs. Gates suggests that the answer is to tax them like humans. It’s bafflingly simple, and actually very smart. The video for this , along with a written interview if you’d like to .

Expanding on the idea Gates says that if a worker does $50,000 worth of […]
