Omidyar Network, the philanthropic investment arm started by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, has invested $493,000 into an experiment giving people in Kenya free money.

The experiment, put on by the charity GiveDirectly, tests an up-and-coming solution to poverty known as basic income. People under basic income receive a set amount of money on a regular basis to cover expenses like rent, food, and clothing.

Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich believes President Donald Trump is behaving more like a sociopath than a narcissist when it comes to his personality.

Reich, who served during the Clinton administration, said Wednesday that Trump’s recent executive orders barring certain immigrants, his criticism of a federal judge who blocked it, attacks on the press, and peddling of unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud are dangerous.

He made his comments at the NewCo conference in San Francisco, where he also explained that tech companies must be more politically active if they are going to make changes to benefit society as a whole. […]

The West is facing problems, long associated with poor countries…. Unemployment…. Yes, many citizens of USA, UK and other advanced countries, are losing jobs to automation, disruptive technologies and robotisation. The Governments of France and Finland are looking at a novel idea called universal basic income (UBI), to solve this problem. This week several proponents of Universal Basic Income (UBI) came to dinner. I have to admit when I first heard about Universal Basic Income – or the Basic Income Guarantee – I was skeptical. A minimum basic income for everyone? So no one has to work? I was dubious.

NEW DELHI — With nearly 300 million people in a population of 1.3 billion continuing to live in extreme poverty, India is considering giving a small fixed income to its citizens each month in lieu of the current plethora of subsidies and social welfare schemes.

A finance ministry annual survey released ahead of the annual budget last week featured a chapter on universal basic income (UBI), a concept "whose time has come perhaps not for immediate implementation but at least for serious public deliberation."

Two thousand unemployed workers will receive €560 for the next two years in a groundbreaking national basic income trial in Finland.

Early January may have been cold in the north-east of Europe but for 2,000 unemployed Finns, 9 January felt like an exceptionally warm moment.
