EBay's founder just invested $500,000 into an experiment giving away free money

Omidyar Network, the philanthropic investment arm started by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, has invested $493,000 into an experiment giving people in Kenya free money.

The experiment, put on by the charity GiveDirectly, tests an up-and-coming solution to poverty known as basic income. People under basic income receive a set amount of money on a regular basis to cover expenses like rent, food, and clothing.

GiveDirectly is running a small pilot in just a few Kenyan villages at present, but once the full experiment launches in a few months it will be the largest basic income experiment in history. More than 26,000 […]

Robert Reich Accuses Donald Trump Of Behaving Like a Sociopath

Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich believes President Donald Trump is behaving more like a sociopath than a narcissist when it comes to his personality.

Reich, who served during the Clinton administration, said Wednesday that Trump’s recent executive orders barring certain immigrants, his criticism of a federal judge who blocked it, attacks on the press, and peddling of unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud are dangerous.

He made his comments at the NewCo conference in San Francisco, where he also explained that tech companies must be more politically active if they are going to make changes to benefit society as a whole. […]

Is Universal Basic Income A Good Idea?

Is Universal Basic Income A Good Idea?

The West is facing problems, long associated with poor countries…. Unemployment…. Yes, many citizens of USA, UK and other advanced countries, are losing jobs to automation, disruptive technologies and robotisation. The Governments of France and Finland are looking at a novel idea called universal basic income (UBI), to solve this problem. This is a scheme which guarantees every citizen of the country, a basic minimum income to support themselves.

Now, India is looking at this novel concept called universal basic income for an entirely different reason. A number of schemes are run by the Central Government, to give subsidies to […]

Universal Basic Income: Why I Support It In Principle

Universal Basic Income: Why I Support It In Principle

This week several proponents of Universal Basic Income (UBI) came to dinner. I have to admit when I first heard about Universal Basic Income – or the Basic Income Guarantee – I was skeptical. A minimum basic income for everyone? So no one has to work? I was dubious.

Before I get into why I was ultimately convinced we should seriously consider it, here’s how it would work:

Everyone gets a monthly allowance of, say, $1,000 (that number is up in the air so just using $1,000 as an example here). You’d get that $1,000 regardless of how much you make. […]

India mulls universal basic income in the war on poverty

NEW DELHI — With nearly 300 million people in a population of 1.3 billion continuing to live in extreme poverty, India is considering giving a small fixed income to its citizens each month in lieu of the current plethora of subsidies and social welfare schemes.

A finance ministry annual survey released ahead of the annual budget last week featured a chapter on universal basic income (UBI), a concept "whose time has come perhaps not for immediate implementation but at least for serious public deliberation."

Authored by Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian, the survey calculates that annual UBI of 7,620 rupees ($113) […]

can basic income become a worldwide policy? moyan brenn/flickr, cc by-sa mark smith, grenoble école de management (gem) "money for nothing" is not just a song from 1985 by dire straits but also, it seems, a new wave of policies supporting the government providing an income for citizens, regardless of their economic activity. benoît hamon, the surprise winner of the first round of the socialist primaries in france, is the latest high-profile supporter of the idea. Can Finland overhaul its social security system with basic income?

Can Finland overhaul its social security system with basic income?

Two thousand unemployed workers will receive €560 for the next two years in a groundbreaking national basic income trial in Finland.

Early January may have been cold in the north-east of Europe but for 2,000 unemployed Finns, 9 January felt like an exceptionally warm moment. They had just received the first payments of a two-year basic income trial in their accounts. The €560 would not be reduced or interrupted if they took on work.

An old idea, calls for a universal basic income have been growing in recent years, particularly with the rise of precarious employment in industrialised societies. Most current […]
