reader: My take on the Basic Income

Re: Here’s what I’d like to see discussed about UBI

I’m not pro-UBI, I just don’t see what alternative there is if we get to the point where robots can replace a good portion of the population. We may have a preview of this in a decade when truck, bus, taxi and Uber drivers start losing their jobs en masse. If all 3.5 million truck driving jobs in the US went the unemployment rate would go up by 3%. Wouldn’t happen overnight, but what sort of jobs will be created for these people that they’re qualified to do, […]

Guaranteed Income Supplement, Allowance and Allowance for the Survivor

The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), Allowance, and Allowance for the survivor are additional Old Age Security (OAS) income-tested benefits.

The GIS is a monthly benefit available to seniors who have a low income and are living in Canada. Unlike the universal OAS and Canada Pension Plan (CPP), GIS benefits are not taxable.

The liberal government increased the maximum GIS top-up benefit available in the 2016 Federal Budget by up to $947 annually for low-income single seniors. Related : Understanding the Canada Pension Plan Eligibility for the GIS and Benefit Amount You qualify for the GIS if: > You are receiving […]

Bread, Circuses and Universal Basic Income

Bread, Circuses and Universal Basic Income

From Elaine’s Idle Mind:

Bread and Circuses I never really understood the appeal of Universal Basic Income, but after reading the European parliament’s proposal for Robotic Civil Rights I think I finally get it.

See, Europe wants to give robots a form of electronic personhood . Robots will have basic legal rights, provided that “robots are and will remain in the service of humans.” (Is the 13th Amendment a basic legal right in Europe, or is that just an American thing?) The report also proposes a universal basic income for humans, under the assumption that vassal robots will […]

The French ponder ‘joie de vivre’ in a work-free future

PARIS: What role will work play in our future lives populated with robots and driverless vehicles? As France prepares to elect a new president, it is wrangling with bigger issues than simple election manifestos.

The catalyst for the soul-searching has been a proposal from leading Socialist party candidate Benoit Hamon to adopt a universal basic income — a state handout of around 750 euros ($805) a month, made to everyone. "I expect that the digital revolution is going to make work increasingly rare… and we need to prepare for that," Hamon says, underlining how advances in the welfare system have […]

Jurgen De Wispelaere and Lindsay Stirton, “When Basic Income Meets Professor Pangloss”

Jurgen De Wispelaere (Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Tampere) and Lindsay Stirton (Professor of Public Law at the University of Sussex) have coauthored a new article in which they argue that basic income advocates must not ignore questions about how the policy is to be administered (“When Basic Income Meets Professor Pangloss: Ignoring Public Administration and Its Perils”).

De Wispelaere and Stirton consider several reasons for which basic income supporters believe that issues of administration are immaterial, such as the assumption that technology will render administration unproblematic and the comparative claim that administering a basic income could not […]

Scotland ‘interested’ in idea of universal basic income

A universal basic income would provide cash handouts with no strings attached (Photo: Getty) The Scottish Government is “very interested” in the idea of a universal basic income which would see every citizen given a cash handout, the Social Security Minister has said.

Jeane Freeman said she was monitoring a number of pilot projects in Finland, the Netherlands and Canada in case a similar scheme could be introduced in Scotland. “We are interested in the idea of the universal basic income and we’re watching to see how that plays out in Finland” Jeane Freeman MSP Tomorrow a former mining village […]

What is Basic Income? A basic income is also called unconditional basic income, Citizen’s Income, basic income guarantee, universal basic income or universal demogrant.

It is a form of social security in which all citizens or residents of a country regularly receive an unconditional sum of money, either from a government or some other public institution, in addition to any income received from elsewhere. What are the merits? Economists are advocating universal basic incomes for fighting inequality, slow wage growth, advancing automation and fears that immigrants will take away jobs. While free trade and technological advances […]

What Is Poverty, Exactly?

Written by: Pierre Madden

Basic Income, it is argued, provides an effective and efficient means of conquering poverty. What, exactly, is the problem that we are trying to solve? Mention poverty to someone and they are likely to immediately think of the Third World. Bringing the focus back to poverty in developed countries is fraught with preconceptions. People have predispositions to think about issues in certain ways. They share these predispositions with all other members of society regardless of specific opinions on social questions. Various models are utilized rather than others based upon how we frame the issue. [1] […]
