Mountain View picks 3 paths to address local poverty

The Mountain View City Council last week moved forward on major efforts to help the city’s underserved – actions that come as the state’s moratorium on housing evictions expired.

Using $3 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds, the council is giving $1 million to the nonprofit Community Services Agency, which supplies basic needs like food and shelter; $1 million to the Mountain View Solidarity Fund, which helps struggling Latino families; and $1 million to the Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) pilot program.

Alejandro Gaviria’s basic income: A populist promise for 2022.

However, far from being something easy to achieve, the truth is that such a measure will be so difficult to execute that it’s almost impossible it could happen. Populism.

What is Universal Basic Income?

You may have noticed a lot of talk lately about something called, “universal basic income.” The increase in online chatter about universal basic income, or UBI, is likely connected to the government handing out stimulus money during the pandemic.

That’s when others started chiming in about the concept of UBI and advocating its benefits. Of course, the pandemic stimulus checks ended up being a short-term solution, and the government currently has no concrete plans to […]
