The idea of giving everybody an unconditional, regular income has become increasingly popular in the last few years, partly because employment has become less secure and people fear that increasing automation may cause job losses across many sectors.

There are many arguments for and against basic income. Some are concerned with fairness and justice, but many are based on competing ideas about the potential effects. Some argue people would stop working and become dependent on payments, while others believe […]

By Nancy Greene-Gregoire, member of a Montreal working group on Basic Income

There are three designed, costed and funded opFons in the report. We did not try to design an ideal but rather to show governments they have opFons. OpFon 1 is for 18-64 year olds and OpFon 2 includes seniors. Both are based on the same kind of model of current income guarantees for seniors and children where benefits gradually reduce as other income increases. OpFon 3 is the full, individualized Universal Basic Income (UBI) where the same amount goes to everyone.

A=er CERB was introduced and the pandemic was raging, BICN made a decision to declare a preferred opFon for […]

Analysis: The Case for Defunding the Police

Analysis: The Case for Defunding the Police

The phrase “defund the police” has become a rallying cry in the wake of last summer’s uprising for racial justice and a radical reimagining of policing and public safety. While the concept has been on the minds of racial justice advocates since at least 2016, it has raised some concerns and confusion for those less familiar with the movement.

“Won’t taking funds away from the police make communities more dangerous?” people frequently ask me in discussions about the topic. “Aren’t police vital to maintain order and keep communities safe?”

I tell them they are missing the bigger picture. Throughout California, local […]

Free money for Valley farm workers? In a drought, state leaders should back the idea

For now, jobs for farm workers are plentiful. But come this fall, when the full impact of the 2021 drought hits, those jobs may dry up as quickly as last winter’s rains.

To cushion the economic blows of the drought on farm workers, state Sen. Melissa Hurtado, the Democrat from Sanger, is proposing to offer universal basic income to those who toil in California’s fields, orchards and dairies.

Under universal basic income, a recipient gets a monthly payment from the state with no strings attached. Hurtado says her idea would involve pilot projects managed by counties and cities.“IThe UBI concept sounds […]

Supporting college students is smart anti-poverty strategy

Santa Fe will take part in an important national experiment that seeks to show how money can make a difference to people living on the edge of poverty.

It stems from a basic premise: To help poor people, give them money.

This is not about a universal basic income but, rather, a guaranteed income. Each month, a few hundred dollars is deposited into a bank account for people who are struggling. The cushion enables them to pay a high electric bill during a hot summer, cover unexpected medical costs or fix their car so they don’t miss work. Such an infusion […]

Tito Mboweni Photographer: Rodger Bosch/AFP/Getty Images South African Finance Minister Tito Mboweni told an investment conference the Treasury won’t back down on its insistence that any wage agreement for state workers mustn’t breach the government’s fiscal ceiling.

Mboweni made the comments at a conference organized by JSE Ltd. and sponsored by Citibank and Absa Group Ltd. that’s closed to the media, a person attending the event told Bloomberg, asking not to be identified.

Mboweni angered powerful labor unions allied to the ruling African National Congress last year by reneging on a prior deal to raise wages for 1.3 million government workers. […]
