Chicago just launched what officials say is the nation’s largest guaranteed basic income pilot program, becoming a leader in the national movement toward universal basic income.
The Cook County Promised Guaranteed Income Pilot Program will send up to 3,250 eligible residents $500 per month in cash assistance for two years. Chicago citizens can begin applying for the program from Thursday through October 21, and payments are expected to begin in December.
