(CALMATTERS) – If there was ever a good time to convince people that a guaranteed income can make a difference, Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs thought it was a pandemic that is affecting poor areas as well at Black and Latinx, communities take a higher toll. That’s why Tubbs, whose town has been the focus of one of the country’s few experiments with free cash payments for more than a year, launched Mayors for Guaranteed Income last month to drive federal politics. So far, the mayors of Oakland, Los Angeles, Compton, Atlanta and 13 others have signed.
