Several dozen Bay Area families that were recently homeless have begun receiving monthly payments of up to $1,000 through a Google-backed basic-income project and housing study. The pilot project, which began in November, aims to assess the impact of direct cash assistance on housing stability.
“It’s a really under-researched area,” said Martha Galvez, executive director of New York University’s Housing Solutions Lab, which is conducting a study on the project run by San Francisco nonprofits Compass Family Services and Hamilton Families.
