Low-income Providence residents are invited to apply to receive no-strings-attached payments of $500 a month as part of an experimental pilot program, Mayor Jorge Elorza announced on Tuesday.
Elorza has championed the notion of a guaranteed income that would exist alongside other social welfare programs, allowing participants to make their own decisions about how they want to spend the extra cash. While Providence’s initial experiment will be limited to just 110 households, Elorza and other Democratic politicians said at a Tuesday news conference that they hope to eventually see it reproduced on a much larger scale.
