McKone: Blue-collar blues trigger a red wave

The trail behind the Vermont State House winds through the woods, steadily climbing, until it reaches the stone tower at the highest point in Montpelier’s Hubbard Park. But long before you get to the tower — immediately behind the State House, in fact — is the first tent. Soon after that, on the other side of the trail, there’s a larger tent/tarp setup, and farther back, another tent. These makeshift homes of the homeless — only a stone’s throw from our State House — are emblematic of an economy not working for poor and working-class people.
