The Treasury has commissioned a study to determine what long-term plan can be devised to replace the government’s current social assistance subsidy of R350 and reduce the country’s poverty gap.
In a briefing to Parliament’s Committee on Appropriations this week, the Ministry of Finance said that the study was conducted through a unit at the University of Cape Town, where the poverty gap is those that fall under the current food poverty line – currently below R624 per. Person pr. Month.
