NEWARK, NJ — The city of Newark expanded its Guaranteed Income Pilot Program to 400 residents after officials earlier this year launched the initiative with a starting group of 30 residents, aiming to get cash directly into the hands of those faced with economic insecurity. By expanding the initiative to 400 participants, the pilot program entered into its second phase. When the city launched the Newark Movement for Economic Equity (NMEE) in May, officials said the goal was to expand the program step-by-step to 400 individuals that would be randomly selected by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania .
