President Cyril Ramaphosa again hinted at introducing a basic income grant, saying there is a "strong case" for it despite the nation’s "fiscal constraints."
Delivering the 2024 State of the Nation Address, the president said that this will be done by extending and amending the Social Relief of Distress [SRD] Grant."We have seen the benefits of this grant and will extend it and improve it as the next step towards income support for the unemployed," said Ramaphosa.The R350 SRD grant was introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic and currently supports 9 million unemployed people monthly.
