The Ontario Progressive Conservatives are cutting a planned increase to welfare rates this fall, with Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod promising a full plan for social-assistance reform within 100 days.
Instead of seeing the first of three three-per-cent increaseos in Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program payments this fall, she said at a Toronto news conference, recipients will get a 1.5-per-cent increase (in September for those on disability programs, in October for those on Ontario Works). Future increases are in limbo while the government figures out what it wants to do.
