Guest columnist As the President of Local Lodge 2061, District 166 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers during the 35-day government shutdown in 2019, I bear witness to the profound impact of government shutdowns on federal contract workers.

Our union, based in Cape Canaveral, Florida, represents approximately 700 dedicated individuals working on various federal contracts at the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. These federal contract workers play pivotal roles in ensuring the successful completion of crucial government operations, and their plight during government shutdowns must be understood and addressed.
