India’s poor don’t want money — they want health care

A woman in India holding rupees. Would you rather your government provide you services or just give you cash? That’s the question researchers posed to residents of Bihar, India, in a new study .

It’s an important question, because India makes widespread use of cash transfers and is contemplating a universal basic income — cash for everyone. One of the things that appeal to development experts and donors about direct cash transfers is that they’re not paternalistic. Instead of deciding how money is spent, you give people the money, trusting that they have a better idea of their needs than […]

If Elected President, Andrew Yang Wants To Give Every American $1,000

If Elected President, Andrew Yang Wants To Give Every American $1,000

Andrew Yang, a candidate in the Democratic primaries for president, speaks at a town hall meeting sponsored by the Euclid chapter of the NAACP at Christ Lutheran Church in Cleveland, Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019. “You probably heard this about me: There’s an Asian man running for president who wants to give you $1,000, and all three of those things are true,” entrepreneur and presidential candidate Andrew Yang said to a mid-sized crowd of mostly young people gathered in 40-degree temperatures in the Boston Common on Wednesday.

Yang is not a typical candidate, and he knows it. Prior to running for […]

If a universal basic income is implemented, how will you use the money you get from it?

If the universal basic income were $1K pre-tax per month, it would have no noticeable impact on my life. I’d reserve half for income taxes and the rest would just sit in my bank account.

It would be the same as giving a minimum wage worker a 10 cent per hour raise. It’s a nice token gesture but totally pointless, a bit like the Paul Ryan tax giveaway for the middle class.

First, I don’t believe everyone should get a universal basic income. That’s a totally wasteful and unnecessary redistribution of capital.Rather, a basic income should be offered as an option […]

Green New Deal Resolutions Generate Little Reaction in General Assembly

<br/> PROVIDENCE — Green New Deal resolutions have been received with little fanfare or criticism as they make their way through the General Assembly.

Its advocates are promoting the resolution as a concept rather than a list of mandates to cut greenhouse-gas emissions and as a guideline for how to prepare the state for the ever-growing harm inflicted by climate change.

In fact, the resolutions ( H5665 and S695 ) ask the state to simply receive a report from the independent Rhode Island Green New Deal Research Council . Its dozen members represent economic sectors such as fishing and farming and […]

Q & A: What Would Universal Basic Income Mean for Appalachia?

Crystal Snyder worked for over two years in a job training program through Coalfield Development Corporation Historically, the coal industry has shaped the economic boom and bust cycle in our region. But major changes to the industry have created new strains on our economic system here in Appalachia, and some wonder if a radical fix is needed to support the poor or underemployed middle class. Some Democrats in Congress have pointed to an idea, called Basic Universal Income, as one possible solution. Lovey Cooper, contributing editor with 100 Days in Appalachia, co-wrote an article about Basic Universal Income, or […]

Could Our Data Form The Basis Of A New Universal Basic Income?

Could Our Data Form The Basis Of A New Universal Basic Income?

Our personal data could drive new market possibilities soon enough. Since 1990 and the creation of the modern internet you’ve probably heard the phrase “robots will take over the world” once or twice.

That’s because, in the coming transformation of the global economy, job losses will be inevitable.

That eventuality demands some forward-thinking solutions to head off a potential crisis in the making. The good news is that there may be a way for the very technologies at the heart of the looming problem to provide a solution. The pathway comes by using their own data as a new currency, and in […]

How to one-up the universal basic income

A radical proposal to redefine and extend service provision to all those in need without breaking the bank has the potential to spark something truly transformative. Nick Dowson takes a closer look.

The idea of a ‘basic income’ as a social fix has gained unprecedented prominence across the political spectrum in recent years. But now there may be a new kid on the block.A universal basic income (UBI) is a flat cash benefit paid to everyone, regardless of wealth (or need), proposed as everything from a way to save humanity from robot-induced unemployment and/or labour drudgery to a […]

BOSTON — A $1,000-per-month stipend for every adult and a new benchmark for economic health were among the reforms Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang proposed in his broad-ranging speech before a rally on the Boston Common Wednesday.
Standing in chilly air on the Boston Common’s Parkman Bandstand, Yang characterized his campaign as a bipartisan effort that also aims to thwart President Donald Trump’s policies. The crowd listened to Yang for about 30 minutes — some having waited an hour before — and held up signs that read “Math” and “Welcome to Mathachussetts,” alluding […]
