Experimenting with universal basic income

Experimenting with universal basic income

In the modern world, everybody should have the opportunity to work and to thrive. Most countries can afford to make sure that everybody has their basic needs covered. One idea that could help make this a reality is a universal basic income. This concept should be further explored to see how it can work practically. Boyd: Economy and the poor

A recent study in India showed how income can influence one’s decisions in life. The study compared the IQs of farmers when they had a rich harvest vs. a poor harvest, i.e, living below the poverty line. When times were good, their IQs were 14 points higher than when times were bad.

One of the reasons for this study was to determine why so many believe the poor remain so because they make stupid decisions and are unwilling to try and improve themselves.

One of the authors of this study labeled the discrepancy as “It’s the context stupid," i.e., people behave […]

You don’t have to convince Likezo Nasilele that giving people a small but steady stream of cash with no strings attached may be the smartest way to fix poverty. Just a few years ago Nasilele and her husband, Chipopa Lyoni, couldn’t even afford to feed their four children properly. Then Nasilele, who lives in a rural village in Western Zambia, lucked into an experimental government program that has provided her with up to $18 every other month. In the 2 1/2 years since, she and her husband have more than doubled the money by using it to start several […]

Is universal basic income a realistic solution?

Is universal basic income a realistic solution?

It’s difficult to pinpoint the definition of either term, but the community here has converged on approximately the following:

is an economic system based on the organization of private property for profits. Characteristics central to a capitalist economy include capital accumulation, voluntary exchange, a price system, and competitive markets.

Is a range of social or economic systems that share a desire to end the class relation found in capitalism between those who own the means of production and those who must sell their labor for a wage to survive. That said, both terms carry significant historical and ideological baggage, and there’s no […]

> I think it is something that needs to be approached gradually. With lots of discussion. Universal health care is a good start. Universal housing, perhaps, next?

If schools are free and that means supplies and fees included, health care is free and that includes all meds, minimal food, housing is available at no cost,
what else is needed? Free basic transportation?
I would favor making essentials like schools, housing, public transit free. I believe that restraints on urban sprawl, unrecyclable goods, fossil fuels, addictive drugs–things that hurt society and the environment must become more controlled substances. […]

Could the Bank of England create money to pay into the economy as a Basic Income?

Could the Bank of England create money to pay into the economy as a Basic Income?

Written by Rachel Oliver on August 12, 2017. In televised debates during the recent general election campaign, several politicians made reference to there being no “magic money tree”. When in fact, there sort of is. This, together with a survey in 2014 that showed that only one in ten MPs know where money comes from, exposes a huge education gap amongst our most powerful elected officials, on one of the most important aspects of our economy: money.

Money is something that is often taken for granted, but in fact how it is created and allocated is a political, cultural and […]

Space funding for Universal Basic Income

Futurism, August 6, 2017

Could we use space to pay for a Universal Basic Income? Tom Ward addresses this question in a Futurism article . The article discusses the idea of using space to fund a Basic Income; the money being generated from future space tourism and mining . The argument—akin to that of a citizen’s dividend —is that space belongs to us all, so we should all benefit from it.

Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic is planning to make commercial spaceflights before the end of 2018. Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and others are also looking to monetize space tourism.Companies are […]
