Universal Basic Income… Again

The American Interest isn’t impressed with proposals for a “universal basic income” approach to welfare, particularly as a means of adjusting for a changing economy: It’s easy to see why this idea is appealing to Silicon Valley technologists, to economic policy wonks, to citizens of rationalia. It satisfies fully the demands of what Shadi Hamid has called “chart-based” liberalism, with its homo economicus model of human behavior. Globalized capitalism is exacerbating inequality and squeezing jobs outside of metropolitan centers? The capitalist winners can just pay off the losers with a UBI and go about their merry way. The price […]

PODCAST: Can the Universal Basic Income Save Asia from the Automation Cliff?

Nobody is safe from the automation cliff. If we want to avoid this enormously disruptive trend, the time is now to start the process of implementing universal basic income. In this episode of The News Lens Radio, we sound out the views of experts and academics working on advocacy and implementation of a universal basic income (UBI) – the unconditional distribution of enough cash for all of us to secure a basic standard of living.

Critics have called UBI unaffordable, a deterrent to seeking work, and in the case of Switzerland, which rejected a nationwide referendum on the scheme last […]

The bizarre tale of President Nixon’s basic income plan

The bizarre tale of President Nixon’s basic income plan

It was the summer of ’69, the end of the decade that brought us flower power and Woodstock, rock ’n’ roll and Vietnam, Martin Luther King and feminism. It was a time when everything seemed possible, even a conservative president strengthening the welfare state.

In August of that year, President Nixon presented a bill providing for a modest basic income, calling it “the most significant piece of social legislation in our nation’s history.” According to Nixon, the baby boomers would do two things deemed impossible by earlier generations. Besides putting a man on the moon (which had happened the month […]

It’s not just the manufacturing sectors, everything is changing.Consider the new technologies we hear about every day. From driverless vehicles, drone delivery services, fully-automated shops, right through to software designed to replace doctors in prescribing medication.A universal basic income may well be the only option in the future, unless we decide to have a massive culling of the human race…2 people like this Member Member Member I’ve seen it and variants on numerous sources. The Trans-humanist Party and trans-humanists in general talk quite a bit about it as well as "enhanced humans" vs […]

4,000 Homes Receive “Universal Income” As Canada’s Leader Trudeau Hands Out Free Money

Canada’s Justin Trudeau is spearheading an effort to test a universal basic income in Ontario. The expensive trial will run for three years. Canada plans to launch an expensive and controversial experiment. Eligible Ontario households will receive up to $24,000 a year while the government tests the merits of providing a universal basic income.

Basic income proposals are supported by both conservative and liberal intellectuals. The left focuses on the gains that would accrue to the poor while some Republicans believe that it’s an alternative to bloated government infrastructure. Welfare offices currently dot the country and employ thousands of people.

“People […]

Some residents of Thunder Bay will be part of a three-year study by the Ontario provincial government to see if a basic income program is a better solution than existing programs to help people on low incomes.

Under the pilot program, single individuals will receive $16,989 (Canadian) per year and couples will receive $24,027 per year, less 50 percent of any earned income. For example, a single person earning $10,000 per year would receive an additional $11,989 in basic income, for […]

National Column: Basic income plan is bread without circuses

National Column: Basic income plan is bread without circuses

by Thomas Walkom

Back in the 1970s, a basic income (or guaranteed annual income as it was called then) was seen as way to end poverty.

Those on the right viewed the concept, which in its purest form involves government handing out cheques to everyone below a certain income level, as a way to cut back a debilitating and ruinously expensive welfare system. Those on the left saw it as a simpler and more humane way to transfer money to the needy. Manitoba’s New Democratic government briefly experimented with the idea. There were plenty of needy people in those days. Still, poverty […]
