The United States has generated more heat-trapping carbon pollution than any other nation, but it has not felt the impact of climate change in equal measure. Poorer countries in warmer latitudes are enduring the most devastating droughts , heat waves , and violent storms , and seeing more poverty , disease and mass migration as a […]

How will society keep human labor relevant in the era of increasing automation?

How will society keep human labor relevant in the era of increasing automation?

In an era of increasing automation and mass unemployment, we will need to readjust our concept of work. We are developing to a state where we will first and foremost need to learn how to live harmoniously as a single collective. The most important factor that will hold us together as a society will be positive attitudes to each other, which we will need to develop upon growing divisive drives and egoism that will naturally make us increasingly distant from one another.

We will thus need to learn how to become satisfied with what we need for our sustenance, and […]

The Meeting Place

Recently there has been plenty of discussion about reviving the UK economy after Covid to create new (and “greener”) jobs, especially to “level up” former “Red Wall” parts of the country, and “Build Back Better”. One solution gaining interest and scrutiny is Universal Basic Income, through schemes which guarantee everyone enough for their minimum needs.

In October 2020 more than 500 Peers and Councillors wrote to the Chancellor urging consideration of the idea (see note 1), and this year 172 MPs and Peers did the same, although Rishi Sunak had already responded to a Scottish enquiry that the government was […]

Why pandemic benefits are problematic for universal basic income

Why pandemic benefits are problematic for universal basic income

The writer is the editor of MoneyWeek

Let’s say you’re unemployed and someone offers you $ 15 an hour to work 40 hours a week as a shift supervisor at McDonald’s in the United States. That would give you $ 600 per week. It is not a fortune. It’s not terrible either. So, all other things being equal, if you needed some work you’d probably take it. But what if someone else offers you just over $ 600 a week if you don’t take it? $ 650 maybe – to stay home instead. I guess you could think twice.
