Some great ideas gain very little traction. Sometimes because its time and place have not yet come. Sometimes they’ve come and gone. Either dilemma is not insoluble, not if its proponents bother to use what’s known about the science of social change.

Consider the idea of society recovering then sharing the values it generates by its mere presence, which is largely the annual rental value of locations. Other values, too, belong to society, but the biggest chunk is land value, and that’s the one that has long been in the sights of a few economic reformers. And in your […]

Universal basic income would cost over $85 billion per year: PBO

Introducing a universal basic income (UBI) would cost the government over $85 billion and raise taxes on the middle class according to a new report from the Parliamentary Budget Office.

The report released on Wednesday estimates that providing a universal basic income would cost $85 billion if introduced this year, or approximately 25% of the federal budget.

The PBO based their model off of the 2017 Ontario basic income pilot project, which guaranteed working-age individuals and couples at least $16,989 and $24,027 per year, respectively. The model excludes giving guaranteed income to seniors. While providing benefits to the poorest 40% of Canadians, […]

Hartford to consider a universal basic income pilot program

The City of Hartford’s Court of Common Council voted in March to create a task force to assess the possibility of a universal basic income pilot program for some of its residents. The task force will study the issue and report their findings to the city council.

The initial resolution put forward in February cited the COVID-19 pandemic; other UBI pilot programs in cities like Stockton, California; national lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle who have supported a UBI, and a Roosevelt Institute study that found a national UBI would create $4.6 million jobs.

Chrystia Freeland is ready to go on a spending spree. But how is she going to pay for it?

Chrystia Freeland is ready to go on a spending spree. But how is she going to pay for it?

Read through the list of resolutions bubbling up at this weekend’s Liberal policy convention, and you’ll realize there’s a subtext: big spending is a virtue.

The party’s grassroots are looking for public transit, regional development, affordable housing, onshoring of manufacturing, high-speed internet, clean energy, infrastructure, high-speed rail and high-speed internet.

And then there are the big-ticket recommendations: pharmacare for all, and a universal basic income for all too. They’re proposed in the name of improving the quality of life in Canada, post-pandemic and in the longer run too. Nary a mention is made of who will pay the bill.A massive expansion of […]

Andrew Yang Really Might Be the Next Mayor of New York

Lauren Tamaki Andrew Yang is in the Throgs Neck neighborhood of the Bronx, standing next to a lectern on an empty city street.

He’s just resumed his campaign for New York City mayor after taking two weeks off to recover from COVID-19. The strain of the illness shows. He’s hard to hear through his two masks. He coughs occasionally. He seems tired, though his trademark egghead affability—think “that chemistry teacher the middle schoolers really like” or “the guy who you have to admit leads a good team-building exercise”—is on full display. He hams it up for passersby, posing for thumbs-up […]

Parliamentary budget officer says basic income program could halve poverty rate

OTTAWA — The pressure on the federal Liberal government to introduce a universal basic income ratcheted up a notch Wednesday with a report from the parliamentary budget officer that suggests it could cut poverty rates in Canada by almost half in one year.

The report landed just one day before the opening of a three-day virtual Liberal convention, where Liberal MPs and grassroots party members from east to west are pushing the idea in top priority policy resolutions.

However, the hefty price tag — estimated by budget officer Yves Giroux at $85 billion in 2021-22, rising to $93 billion in 2025-26 […]

Despite her headline-grabbing philanthropy last year, MacKenzie Scott’s fortune is growing faster than she can give it away. Scott, much of whose wealth is in Amazon stock, donated $5.8 billion of her $36 billion in 2020, targeting groups hit hardest by the pandemic and showering money on historically Black colleges and universities. But because of the growth in value of Amazon stock, she is now worth $53 billion. Scott has signed the Giving Pledge and has moved speedily to make gifts. She wrote last year that she wouldn’t stop giving "until the safe is empty." […]
