Expert panel advises against universal basic income

Port Alberni, BC

An independent panel examining inequality and poverty in B.C. will continue to work with First Nations after handing a report to government that recommends against the idea of a universal basic income.

The expert panel on basic income was set up three years ago as part of a confidence and supply agreement with the B.C. Green Party during the 2017-2020 NDP minority government. In early February they weighed in, recommending against a universal income pilot project and in favour of broad reforms to the existing social support system.Universal basic income implies guaranteed income for all, although the idea […]

Covid-19 R350 special grant far too little for impoverished, Black Sash says

The Black Sash says the R350 Social Relief of Distress grant is not enough to help keep the very poor healthy during the Covid-19 pandemic.

It recommends that it be aligned with the Upper-Bound Poverty Line of R1 268, or at the very least, adjusted to the Food Poverty Line of R585.

The NGO said President Cyril Ramaphosa’s extension also leaves out adult women who are unemployed, and have to make do with only their children’s child support grant. Black Sash says the R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is woefully inadequate to help prevent […]

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey Donates $3 Million to Test Universal Basic Income

Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey has said he will donate $3 million (roughly Rs. 22.55 crores) to a group of US mayors to experiment with the creation of universal basic income.

The sum will go to the group Mayors for a Guaranteed Income (MGI), a coalition of leaders from 16 cities who are in favour of universal basic income — regular payments to residents generally meant to fight poverty and meet citizens’ basic needs.

“This is one tool to close the wealth and income gap, level systemic race and gender inequalities, and create economic security for families,” Dorsey, whose fortune is […]

$2,000 recurrent checks then Universal Basic Income

$2,000 recurrent checks then Universal Basic Income

Thoughts on Universal Basic Income Entitlements…

Currently, the U.S. is still being ravaged owing to the consequences of the horribly managed COVID-19 response by ex-president Donald Trump. We need $2,000 universal recurrent checks until this crisis is over. At this time, it is a matter of life and death.

I have been for universal basic income (UBI) for over a decade.UBI would be a monthly dollar amount given to everyone. The UBI would have no requirements other than everyone would receive it. Universal is a legal definition. It means everyone and not means-tested. Means-tested is a legal term that means […]

The Case for Universal Basic Income – What It Is And How We Can Afford It

The Case for Universal Basic Income – What It Is And How We Can Afford It

This week I finished Rutger Bregman’s book “Utopia for Realists” . He’s a Dutch historian, left-leaning and genuinely progressive. He has some pretty out-there ideas, but backs them up with evidence-based arguments and data. Bregman makes a great point that the left knows what it’s against (racism, homophobia etc.), but hasn’t got a clear idea of what it stands for.

However, in this book, Bregman gives us something to work towards – Universal Basic Income.

What is Universal Basic Income (or UBI)? Fox News’ worst nightmare, UBI has gained popularity as an idea over the past 5 years, […]

Direct checks caught support on a national stage. Can cities use them to abolish poverty?

Direct checks caught support on a national stage. Can cities use them to abolish poverty?

Then-presidential candidate Andrew Yang speaks in Baltimore, February 2019. How do you end poverty and rebalance the structural economic inequality that resulted from decades of racist policies?

It’s a big question, but in recent years there has been more interest in a solution that doesn’t take many words to explain: Provide regular, direct cash payments to residents. No strings attached.

The idea has surfaced on the national stage in recent years. But as with many policy plans, it may be the local level that proves it out. One sign of that was evident in Baltimore this week, when Mayor Brandon Scott […]

Basic income is needed to underpin a fairer society

Basic income is needed to underpin a fairer society

The year 2020 has demonstrated why the expression “May you live in interesting times” is seen as a curse. As the world reeled under the loss of life, economic impacts and the removal of opportunities many of us have taken for granted, the desire to move back to more stable times has appeared attractive.

Yet the chaos we continue to live through also offers us a chance to reimagine the world we live in — to challenge the dominant presumptions we entered the pandemic with, and to implement new policies to ensure we build forward better. One of the […]

County supervisors OK universal basic income pilot project

Some of Yolo County’s poorest families with young children will receive a hand up and out of poverty through a universal basic income pilot project approved by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.

The 31 families in the CalWORKS Housing Support Program that have children under the age of 2 will receive monthly payments for a year, up to a maximum of $12,155.

That cash assistance, combined with the CalWORKS grant they already receive to help with housing and other costs, would bring these families’ incomes above California’s minimum poverty threshold ($25,658 for a family of four), according to Nolan Sullivan […]
