Los Angeles may soon become the largest city in the US to introduce a universal basic income (UBI) program, joining its neighbors to the north – including Stockton, Oakland and San Francisco – in offering some residents a monthly cash boost with no strings attached.

The $24m LA program, introduced as part of Mayor Eric Garcetti’s budget proposal, released on Tuesday, would provide $1,000 a month to 2,000 families for a year if passed by the city council. Like most other UBI plans, those given the funds can use the money however they please.

The city of Stockton, California, has proven that basic income programs are the future of anti-poverty policy. At least that’s the conceit of those cheering the results of a recent study that tracked Stockton residents who received no-strings-attached cash payments in the years before the pandemic arrived. With prominent politicians, including New York mayoral candidate Andrew Yang, advocating implementation of such programs in dozens of cities and states, this study is supposedly a game-changer. (The Center Square) – A group of 43 Democratic mayors from across the country is backing plans to provide certain low-income residents with a universal basic income.

Called Mayors for a Guaranteed Income (MGI), the group argues that “economic security isn’t a new challenge or a partisan issue.” The way to end or reduce poverty, they argue, is to guarantee a certain level of income to low-income residents with no strings attached.

( ETH ) – The COVID pandemic has reportedly devastated the city of Chelsea, Massachusetts in terms of infection rates and unemployment. “We have lots of undocumented workers here so many of them lost their hours, lost their jobs and they were not entitled to any kind of government assistance,” City Manager, Tom Ambrosino, told CBN News .

In February 2019, then-Stockton Mayor Michael D. Tubbs launched the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration (‘SEED’), a 24-month guaranteed income initiative, the first mayor-led initiative of the sort in the US. Two years later, the preliminary results from the first twelve months of the experiment (through to February 2020, before the pandemic) have been released and the key findings are positive with the guaranteed income reducing income volatility, enabling access to full-time work, improving mental health and allowing better control over one’s time and decisions.
