Covid-19 has made a basic income system an economic imperative

UBI is not the answer any more than the work houses were in the 1800s.

Universal health care or a socialized medical system might work along with government supported food banks, housing and education as all of these can be deemed human rights to some degree. Personal wealth or income will never be a human right for very long before the state twists it into a privilege or entitlement that can be taken away from those who do not toe the line.

UBI sounds like a good idea until you consider the eventual consequences of such a scheme. I’m not just […]

Covid-19 has made a basic income system an economic imperative

Covid-19 was the trigger for an economic collapse waiting to happen. There will be other triggers. The challenge is to build a new income distribution system that will provide society, and every individual, with much greater resilience.

What has produced the fragility, in Britain and globally, is the evolution of rentier capitalism, in which more and more of the income flows to owners of financial, physical and so-called intellectual property. The COVID-19 pandemic has upended the idea of “work.” With face-to-face contact now risky, entire industries—like retail and food service—have been devastated, while the office as we know it, at least for the moment, is dead. Work for many Americans is now alienating and isolated—assuming there’s a job at all.

The pandemic is dehumanizing work in other ways, as companies accelerate efforts to swap out vulnerable humans with virus-proof machines. Robots serving cappuccinos in Tokyo coffee shops might be […]

Last month’s Throne Speech committed to the creation of a new Canadian Disability Benefit for persons with disabilities – that’s good news. The details remain vague, but some disability advocates have long championed a basic income for people with disabilities. The new Disability Benefit may offer a step toward that reality.

Basic income is a guarantee that no Canadian will have to live on an income far below the poverty line. […]

Some suspected that this could be the basis of what will one day become a guaranteed basic income. Could this […]
