In Kenya, a non-governmental organisation, GiveDirectly, started a UBI project in rural Kenya paying about Sh80 of $.075 daily for at least 12 years since 2017.

Transfers significantly improved well-being on common measures such as hunger, sickness and depression in spite of the pandemic, but with modest effect sizes. This is the third of my articles aimed at resetting our development discourse. In […]

Universal Basic Income (only) for Women

Universal Basic Income (only) for Women

A few years ago there was a big movement that erupted seemingly out of nowhere. It was called the #MeToo movement and it focused on the sexual abuses of powerful men and their female employees. It took down some huge names like Matt Lauer, Harvey Weinstein, Mario Batali, Louis C.K. and Bill O’Reilly. Those were just the famous men we have heard of. There were countless other cases in corporate America that never made the news. Regular women would tell stories of feeling uncomfortable, touched or attacked by men.

What was it all about?

Women are now comprising a huge percentage […]

UBI is need of the hour

UBI is need of the hour

Instead of relying on an expensive and complex aid industry and by bypassing NGOs and governments, cash transfers given directly to poor families will enable them to tackle poverty

COVID-19 has caused unprecedented disruptions globally and inflicted the greatest pain on those who had already been rendered most vulnerable, spurring unknown hardship and growing unease among low-income families and micro-businesses. It has uncovered existing inequities and created new ones. A Universal Basic Income (UBI) has been strongly advocated by economists, industry captains and policy-makers across all dialogical hues. It is perhaps the only way to stave off large-scale […]
