America should shift towards socialism

America should shift towards socialism

Socialism is a scary word to most Americans because they do not understand how it works. Most people think socialism is the same as communism, even though it is completely different. Socialism simply describes a system of government that works to benefit the entire community. Currently, Americans are living in a corporatist society which only works to benefit major corporations and the wealthy. If there is hope for improving America and making it work for everyone living here, we need to shift from corporatism to socialism.

We already have socialist programs in place, but they are not doing enough to […]

Basic Income and Veganism

Basic Income and Veganism

Systemic, radical changes in the United States are now in the cards. You can feel it in the news and in the streets, even with COVID-19 acting as a damper on protests. But we haven’t had much discussion of what specifically these changes should be. We know—though mainstream economists still haven’t figured it out—that economic growth isn’t the answer: we have hit the limits to growth . We need a basic income: a guaranteed cash payment to all adult citizens sufficient to support a minimal lifestyle.

Now you’re probably saying to yourself, “OK, basic income: possibly a good idea. But […]

Universal Basic Income Could Boost ‘Climate-Safe’ Practices, But Only with Careful Design

Universal Basic Income Could Boost ‘Climate-Safe’ Practices, But Only with Careful Design

A universal basic income (UBI) could be a cornerstone of the shift to a “climate-safe economy”, and it’s time for the environmental community to embrace the concept, its advocates say.

“Proponents say the benefits of UBI are far-reaching, and that a stable source of income could help lift folks out of poverty; allow people to better balance responsibilities like caring for family members or pursuing a degree; encourage personal freedom; provide security for the self-employed; and simply allow people to work less,” The Revelator writes . SDLP leader Colum Eastwood Over the course of the last number of months, people have made immense sacrifices to keep their friends, family and communities safe. Lockdown has been difficult for us all mentally, emotionally and, for far too many, financially.

The introduction of Covid-19 wage subsidy schemes for those on furlough and for the self employed have demonstrated that an economic model that puts people at its centre isn’t impossible. We can prioritise providing everyone with a stable income that allows them, in turn, to provide for their families. That’s part of the reason why, along with my colleague […]

The answer is basic income

I believe that I have had an epiphany. As with most epiphanies, I have just started to understand some of the implications of climate change on economics, and now have a better understanding of a possible solution for many of the concerns. A solution that at least some others have been thinking about.

The following economic impacts will occur over the time frame of shifting the economy off carbon fuels:

There will be an increase in unemployment. This will be a minor portion of the economy and a continuation of employment reductions from technical changes. The employment changes will be of […]
