During the pandemic several local organizations piloted a program offering cash transfers to low income residents mostly in Ward 8. THRIVE East of the River was created to assist residents most vulnerable to negative economic and social impacts of the pandemic, and help provide a financial bridge for people now and through recovery.

Unlike other assistance programs, there are no restrictions on how participants can use the funds. That means researchers were able to see how a guaranteed income pilot program impacts a participant’s well […]

Chicago to launch anti-poverty guaranteed income pilot

Chicago to launch anti-poverty guaranteed income pilot

In February 2020, before COVID-19 arrived in full force in the U.S., Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot gathered politicians, academics, and ordinary Chicagoans to an anti-poverty summit called Solutions Toward Ending Poverty, or STEP, to kick off a mayoral agenda dedicated to finding concrete solutions to “entrenched generational poverty,” Lightfoot says. While many bought into the discourse, critics balked. “Some people looked at me like I had two heads,” she says. “Why is she even talking about these things?”

Then, the pandemic hit, decimating jobs and incomes, and throwing even more people into poverty. Cities across America rushed to implement safety […]

Wells operates $2,100 per month guaranteed income for former foster youth

In Wales, more than 7,000 children depend on government-aided care – whether placed in public care facilities or with foster parents, which is the case for the majority. In fact, Wales has the highest rate of “seen children” – a term used for children in any type of foster care in the UK – at 115 per 10,000 children. When they leave care, they are often left to navigate housing, health care and employment alone, without adequate finances, relying on state benefits and substandard housing.

Soon, they will receive income from the Welsh government to aid them. The government recently […]
