A False Accusation Put Me in Prison, a Safety Net Could Have Kept Me Out

August 13, 2024 Photo by Tyler Rutherford I received a 60-year prison sentence for a murder I didn’t commit. After 25 years of fighting this injustice, I was exonerated.

I’ve learned some hard lessons about our criminal justice system. I’ve also learned how simple safety net policies — like a modest guaranteed base income or no-strings-attached child allowance — could have kept millions of struggling young people like me out of trouble.

I had a good childhood in Flint, Michigan, but we were poor and opportunities were few. My parents were loving and supportive, but engaged in illegal activities to make […]

Sam Altman-Funded Universal Basic Income Experiment Finds Recipients of Free Money Opt Out of Work – Here’s Why

Back to the list A new universal basic income (UBI) experiment funded by tech billionaire Sam Altman has found people who receive free money generally tend to work less. In a study titled “The Employment Effects of Guaranteed Income: Experimental Evidence From Two U.S. States,” researchers gave 1,000 low-income individuals $1,000 per month unconditionally for three years.

Participants mostly spent the extra money on basic things like food, transportation or rent, and enjoyed a slight reduction in stress.

But the study found that participants on average worked about 15 minutes less per day, something that the researchers say policymakers should consider […]

••• Free money makes people less likely to work. If common sense doesn’t convince you of that, a new study should. In July, a National Bureau of Economic Research paper looked at the effects of a guaranteed-income program run by two nonprofits. The initiative gave $1,000 a month for three years to 1,000 low-income individuals. As a control group, 2,000 individuals […]

Protecting Women’s Livelihoods in Times of Pandemic: Temporary Basic Income and the Road to Gender Equality

Protecting Women's Livelihoods in Times of Pandemic: Temporary Basic Income and the Road to Gender Equality

Women face persistent structural challenges to decent jobs and economic independence. Now their livelihoods are even more vulnerable because of the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. This vulnerability is due in part to a system of gender inequality that imposes unpaid care and domestic work on women through socially constructed gender norms, and that deprives women of effective universal protection systems. How can we cushion the adverse effects during the COVID-19 crisis while paving the way for structural transformation? This policy brief, part of UNDP’s Development Future Series, examines the most at-risk elements of women’s income-generation capacity, presents […]

EDITORIAL: 'Basic Income' programs do more harm than good

FILE PHOTO: The Denver City Council Tuesday approved a $2 million contract with the Denver Basic Income Project, which provides no questions asked cash payments to homeless people as part of a study with the University of Denver. Successful philanthropists — people who cause positive change — know the difference between a handout and a hand up. A handout typically sustains the misery of dependence. A hand up can lead to freedom, prosperity, happiness and healthy self-esteem.

A handout costs society, whereas a hand up can pay the combined dividends of reducing dependence and facilitating productivity that contributes to the […]
