Guaranteed income programs might improve people's lives, but not their health

That’s according to a study published last month by the National Bureau of Economic Research of a guaranteed income program that gave people $1,000 every month over three years to spend as they wished.

Across the U.S., guaranteed income programs have gained traction as a strategy to alleviate poverty and address income gaps, with more than 150 programs across 35 states announced since 2017, according to the Economic Security Project. The initiatives provide people, typically low-income, with […]

Retire by 65? Get real, say one in two Americans

Amid a host of persistent and growing financial challenges, a new survey by Equitable reveals a large share of Americans have lost hope on reaching a long-enshrined milestone.

According to the research, which drew from a poll of more than 1,000 participants, revealed nearly half of American consumers believe retiring at the age of 65 is realistic. Rather than 65, a full 47 percent of respondents expect they’ll retire nearly a decade later at the ripe old age of 74.

The study respondents pointed to several challenges in achieving retirement security including rising living expenses (68 percent), insufficient savings (66 percent), […]

Universal Basic Income Programs Are Guaranteed Failures

Universal Basic Income (UBI) programs (sometimes called Guaranteed Income programs) are expanding around the United States, unfortunately. In St. Louis, the city passed a new pilot guaranteed income program that has been halted by the courts , at least for now.

In a UBI program, lower-income people are guaranteed an amount of money from the government. (In theory, that “guaranteed income” would apply to everyone, but so far most programs around the country have just been enacted for lower-income people.) UBI programs are different from the myriad other welfare programs in that there are generally no rules on how the […]

Improved Retirement Confidence Starts with Clarity

Improved Retirement Confidence Starts with Clarity

New research from the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) shows Americans are cautiously confident about their retirement prospects. However, confidence comes from understanding, and many individuals are confused about the different terminology used for income related to retirement planning. A pair of recent BenefitsPro articles addressed these seemingly disparate yet related topics.

The first article highlighted the results of an EBRI survey , which found that although retirement confidence has increased slightly, only 2 in 10 workers are confident that they’ll have enough money to live comfortably in retirement. And workers still have plenty of concerns when it comes to […]

Good news if you live in California: New $500/monthly payments in Stimulus Checks for thousands of Americans

Good news if you live in California: New $500/monthly payments in Stimulus Checks for thousands of Americans 1 To ease the economic hardship that many families are going through, several states in the United States are coming up with stimulating stimulus programs. These programs, mainly targeting households below the poverty line, seek to mitigate the aftermaths of COVID-19 on the economy, including inflation, which is on an upward trend.

Even though EIPs are over for the federal government, local and state governments have taken over provisions of long-term relief to help Americans struggling with financial issues and fear for their […]

CAL THOMAS: Kamala Harris and the flashy thing

CAL THOMAS: Kamala Harris and the flashy thing

In the film "Men in Black," a pen-like device causes people to forget everything they have seen and heard. Actor Will Smith calls it a "flashy thing."

It appears the media and Democrats are metaphorically using a similar device, hoping voters will forget everything Vice President Kamala Harris has said and done in the past–even the recent past–and accept that what she is saying today are her true beliefs, even when they contradict previous statements and supposed "convictions."

There is so much the media and Harris’ fellow Democrats want to forget she said and did that the flashy thing might need […]
