Technology, commercial property and gold were also popular selections for potential gains over the long term, while mining, retail, industrial and auto stocks languished at the bottom of the list. Andrew Yang believes in UBI. Here’s what his plan would really do for America

Andrew Yang believes in UBI. Here's what his plan would really do for America

Many presidential candidates seem to have one signature issue they’re known for (remember the Medicare-for-All discussion and how Bernie Sanders "wrote the damn bill"?). For Andrew Yang, it’s universal basic income . Universal basic income is guaranteed income provided from a country’s government to its citizens or residents with no work requirement. Yang, who calls his UBI plan a "Freedom Dividend," wants to give every United States citizen age 18 and older $1,000 per month ($12,000 per year). "The Freedom Dividend would provide money to cover the basics for Americans while enabling us to look for a better job, […]

Plan Sponsors Have Multiple Options for Creating Income Streams for Participants

Annuities have a place in defined contribution (DC) retirement plans, and sources say should the SECURE Act get passed and provide additional safe harbor clarification to sponsors, more sponsors are likely to warm up to the idea of offering annuities and guaranteed income choices to their participants.

“The greatest innovations in annuities are taking place among fixed annuities, and developing regulations to catch up to this innovation so that they can be default investments will be the next frontier in retirement plans,” says Doug McIntosh, vice president of investments at Prudential Retirement. “If we want to move the needle for […]

This town is giving families $500 a month, no strings attached. The results are telling

On a recent Saturday morning, for the first time in months, Tomas had time to go to the pool with his kids. He sat at the edge of the water breathing in the smell of chlorine and realized suddenly that his kids had learned to swim, while he had been working. This poolside revelation was generated in no small part with the power of cash.

Since February, Tomas and more than 100 other families in Stockton, California, have been receiving $500 a month with no strings attached. The policy experiment is part of the historic Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration (Seed) […]

Martin Luther King never supported reparations—his “check” referred to job programs and universal basic income

Identitarians claim Martin Luther King supported reparations and quote him saying, "We are coming to get our check." But when they do, they erase the context. The full quote is "Now, when we come to Washington in this campaign, we are coming to get our check." The campaign was the Poor People’s Campaign , and the check was for all poor people.

King was a democratic socialist. He wanted to help all of the poor. He first supported guaranteed jobs, and then moved on to universal basic income.

In 1964, in Why We Can’t Wait , he argued for a Bill […]

Ontario Liberal leadership candidate Alvin Tedjo, centre, speaks with visitors to the Riverside Branch of the Windsor Public Library on Nov. 7, 2019. Spare a thought, this season of good cheer, for Ontario’s Liberals, who find themselves broke, out of office and struggling to make friends.

The mean-spirited might […]

Can I retire early and live off my private pension until I turn 65?

Can you break into your pension early? (Photo: Matt Morton/PA Wire) I am 62 years old and have four years until I can claim my state pension , which is forecast to be £194 per week. I am currently saving into a work-based pension with a pot of around £50,000, but have other pensions from previous jobs which I will receive at 65.

If I wanted to retire either now or in, say, two years’ time, could I use that £50,000 until I get my other pensions and would it affect my state pension?

The reason I ask is that this […]
