Universal Basic Income: An Alternative for Developed Nations

Universal Basic Income: An Alternative for Developed Nations

Skewed distribution of resources and income inequality are two common problems that are faced by virtually every single country on earth. In an attempt to mitigate these problems, different countries came up with different solutions. Some sought to give up control of their factors of production to their respective governments, hence nationalising their industries while others increased the tax rates of ordinary citizens. Promotion and availability of various forms of insurance were also deemed as a solution to the aforementioned issues. A recently formulated concept called the Universal Basic Income seeks to fulfil the same objectives while eliminating the […]

John Weaver | Equal Pay in Soccer: Myths and Facts

No sooner had the U.S. Women’s Soccer team won its final match, the Democrats decided to politicize the event via their old standby bromide of “equal pay.” Personally, although originally looking forward to the matches, I found myself losing all interest when I heard that star player Megan Rapinoe had joined the Colin Kaepernick crowd in her hatred for the U.S. flag, America and Trump.

Consequently, I simply refused to watch. Later I learned that others must have felt similarly since viewership was down in the U.S. by about 30% from 2015 levels. But I digress from the main subject […]

WILL DURST: And now, a few words about words

Will Durst Nobody knows what the earliest word used by humans was. The general consensus is the Sumerians developed the first written language around 3500 B.C., using wedge-shaped symbols called cuneiform. Scholars hypothesize the first word was either "ouch" or "me," although "pie" had to have been up there since the shapes surely reminded the Sumerians of it.

For the last 5,500 years, humans have spent lifetimes searching for the best words to communicate. The precise word can make the difference between understanding and confusing people to the point of banging their heads against metal railings until blood drips out […]

MPs demand end to pensions advisers making ‘fat living’ from savers

Advisers are accused of a lack of transparency Pension scheme managers have been blasted in a parliamentary report for making a ‘fat living’ from customers’ savings.

In a scathing report on the functioning of the UK pensions industry, Westminster’s Work and Pensions Committee says it is “unconvinced” that the industry will rise to the challenge of providing clear, transparent information to pension schemes about the costs and charges of investments.

It says “Government and regulators should not wait for the industry to fail to act voluntarily as they have so many times in the past”, and should instead move now to […]

Cooper: Nixon's guaranteed income plan

Former President Richard Nixon, right, shown with three other former U.S. presidents and then-President George Bush at the 1991 dedication of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, once proposed a guaranteed minimum income. Could you afford a retirement interest-only mortgage?

Could you afford a retirement interest-only mortgage?

Most interest-only mortgage customers can’t afford to switch to retirement interest-only (RIO) deals due to lack of pension savings, Royal London research suggests.

In the next five years, hundreds of thousands of interest-only mortgage customers will reach the end of their terms with no way to pay off their loans.

RIO mortgages are meant to be a lifeline for homeowners approaching retirement. But new research says most people with interest-only mortgages will lack the funds to afford a RIO if they want to keep up their living standards. Here, we look at whether RIOs really are unaffordable, or whether they could […]
