Matt Zwolinski and Miranda Perry Fleischer’s Universal Basic Income lives up to its subtitle, What Everyone Needs to Know —or nearly. In 66 short chapters, the book provides a trove of easy‐to‐read information on the different proposals for a universal basic income (UBI), how they would work, how they compare to the welfare state’s current programs, and the arguments for and against.

A professor of philosophy at the University of San Diego, Zwolinski was the creator of the “Bleeding Heart Libertarians” blog, active from 2011 to 2020. Fleischer, also a libertarian, is professor of finance at the university’s School of […]

The Murky Nature of Our Political Divides

The Murky Nature of Our Political Divides

Gallup recently published data showing that Americans have become more liberal on social issues, and to a lesser extent on economic issues, over the last 20 years. However, that does not mean there is now a majority or even a plurality of the nation aligned on how we should handle major policy issues.

What it does mean is that instead of the back-and-forth stalemate of national politics, governance should be pushed down to local communities as often as possible, where the common ground of sharing a community can often outweigh tribal politics.

The new Gallup data shows that Americans are now […]

Our view: Should Oregonians get a guaranteed income?

Our view: Should Oregonians get a guaranteed income?

Arguments for a universal basic income come from the right and the left. Elon Musk has spoken favorably about it. Some union leaders have pushed for it. And Oregon may have a form of universal basic income on the ballot in November.

We aren’t going to take a stand on the possible ballot measure. It would basically tax corporations and send money to every Oregon resident, roughly $750 a year.

What is this idea?A universal income means paying people benefits with few or no conditions attached. Most benefits to keep people fed, healthy or housed come with conditions, often on how […]
