Many Americans Want Government To Moderate Use of Job-Killing Robots

Pew Research shows continuing love-hate relationship between people and robots.

Americans remain deeply conflicted about the growing use of automation. Many see robots and related technology as enhancing their lives, but more worry that automation will limit their ability to earn a living, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

To eliminate some of the uncertainty, many people said they want the government to help with any potential fallout from automation. For example, a whopping 85% of those surveyed said they favor or strongly favor a requirement that robots work only in unhealthy or dangerous environments, presumably where human […]

Pensions News: Friday 6 October 2017

Today’s edition of Pensions News ( PN ) opens with a question; do you, the reader, play or have you played the lottery or something similar?

Not very long ago, a debate took place in PN’s household. The debate related to a lottery in which the main prize was either £1m in cash or an annual income of some £46,000 (net) paid for the remainder of one’s life. PN was asked (by his wife and daughters) which prize he would opt for if he won this particular prize. After stating that he was not likely to win either has he […]

FCA reveals expectations for pension transfer advice

By Emma Ann Hughes Maggie Craig, special adviser for the Financial Conduct Authority, has revealed exactly what the watchdog expects intermediaries to do when considering a pension transfer.

Speaking the day after the FCA revealed in more than half of the defined benefit pension (DB) transfers the regulator looked at where the recommendation was to move the retirement pot was unsuitable or unclear , Ms Craig said some transfers advice has simply not been appropriate and that needs to change.

In a keynote speech at FTAdviser’s Unpackaging Pensions event, Ms Craig said generic advice in relation to pension transfers was simply […]

6 key findings on how Americans see the rise of automation

The FINANCIAL — From driverless cars to a workplace staffed by robots, automation has the potential to reshape many facets of American life. A Pew Research Center survey conducted in May examines Americans’ attitudes about four emerging automation technologies: workplace automation, driverless cars, robot caregivers, and computer algorithms that evaluate and hire job applicants.

Although Americans tend to have a positive view of technology overall, this survey finds that the continuing march of new technologies is causing them concern. Here are six key findings from the report:

1. The public generally expresses more worry than enthusiasm about emerging automation technologies – […]

Should your RRSP pay for long-term care insurance?

Should your RRSP pay for long-term care insurance?

Open this photo in gallery: Long-term care insurance coverage kicks in once you’re no longer able to independently perform two or more activities of daily living, such as getting dressed, eating, or getting in or out of bed. The premium costs for the coverage depends on a number of factors including how young and healthy you are when you apply. Jennifer Jacobs, a long-term care specialist in Oakville, Ont., who has built her practice around insurance coverage for living benefits, believes we’re heading toward a "perfect storm."

The population of aging Canadians is growing. They are living longer in retirement […]

Opinion: This action plan can give all Americans a secure retirement

Here’s a surprise: U.S. workplace savings programs such as 401(k)s are a successful, innovative, inexpensive and constantly-evolving system that may prove to be the most successful retirement system that Americans have ever seen.

Yes, I know we’re all worried about the boomers and their savings deficit. And we’re preoccupied about the fiscal health and sustainability of Social Security and Medicare. Actually, we have quite a bit to be worried about .

But consider this: more than one-half of Americans today are participating in workplace retirement savings programs or contribute to traditional defined benefit pension plans. In the main, they are pleased […]

Democrats Tiptoe Around Universal Basic Income

Democrats Tiptoe Around Universal Basic Income

Strange Bedfellows Arise Over Social Safety Net Proposal

When former Vice President Joe Biden announced his opposition to universal basic income a few weeks ago, it seemed like he was drawing a line in the sand that he believed progressives shouldn’t cross.

To his left, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) — who may be preparing to reprise his role as a left-wing antagonist in the next presidential primary — supports the policy. But unlike his aggressive push to bring other Democrats on board for his proposal for a single-payer health insurance system, he realizes his colleagues who are officially part of […]

Election 2018: Green Party candidate joins provincial election race in Ottawa South

A longtime south Ottawa resident is asking Ottawa South voters to think green in the next provincial election.

Les Schram, a Billings Bridge resident who has lived in south Ottawa for almost 30 years, says he is ready to take on the job of a member of provincial parliament.

“It’s really about being in touch with people,” said Schram, 71. “If you’re in touch with people and you’re in touch with their concerns, then you can develop legislation that makes sense.”His decision to seek the nomination took no time at all to make. He began volunteering with the Ontario Greens two […]

BITCOIN DIARY: SA's first crypto currency has launched. Say hello to UBX

Lance Boyle has taken leave of his senses and Ray Hartley is in the director’s chair for today

It has begun. South Africa’s first foray into the cryptocurrency market is a go, green lighted, thumbs-ed up, on the launching pad, primed for lift off. A company called Ubu Core has hit the ground with an Initial Token Offering in something called UBX (desperate effort to explain follows later). This ITO appears to be a distant – and more kindly, please God – relative of the Initial Coin Offering.

Nice dodge there. ICOs, in case you haven’t noticed, have acquired a […]
