Our View: Economic reform programme has little to show

Finance Minister Harris Georgiades claimed on Monday that many of the government’s economic reforms had been introduced CHALLENGED on Monday morning about the ineffectiveness of the government’s economic reform programme, finance minister Harris Georgiades argued that this was an unfair criticism because many reforms had been introduced.

He cited the minimum guaranteed income (MGI) as an example of a successful reform and it is true that this may well be remembered as the most successful measure introduced by the government. Perhaps the privatisation of Limassol port could also be considered a positive reform.

The list on the minus side, however, is […]

Enough with the cliché of the poor senior on a fixed income

Enough with the cliché of the poor senior on a fixed income

Income for seniors can offer some degree of protection against the rising cost of living. (dolgachov/Getty Images/iStockphoto) The financially frail senior on a fixed income is a stereotype ready for retirement.

A significant part of your income can be inflation-protected in one way or another when you’re retired, which is to say it’s not fixed at all.

Plenty of Canadians in the work force are living on a fixed income. They’re the ones who work for government agencies or companies that have frozen wages for their employees in a slow economy. Try raising kids and maintaining a home when your wages […]

Coming as it does hot on the heels of the row over BBC salaries , this Sunday Times article is likely to further concern and infuriate female clients, revealing as it does details of the stark differences in the sizes of men’s and women’s pension pots.

First comes some good news – thanks to automatic enrolment, women in full-time work are almost as likely as men to have some sort of pension – 69% versus 70% – but the article goes on to claim women’s pensions […]

In a not-too-distant future city, superintelligent robots will carry out the majority of vital tasks. Driverless cars will ferry passengers to and from points of interest. Sam Altman, the 32-year-old president of Y Combinator, the most prestigious startup accelerator in Silicon Valley, has laid out this utopian vision over the years, and most definitively in a job […]

Socialist Action Policy on Basic Income

Socialist Action Policy on Basic Income

We are seeing a revival of the concept of basic guaranteed income (BI or GAI), both in Canada and internationally. The Ontario Liberal government is about to launch a pilot project. Prince Edward Island will do likewise, while other provincial administrations have expressed interest. Finland initiated a basic income experiment in 2016, and The Netherlands is soon to follow.

Basic income has its supporters and detractors on both left and right. Free-market and libertarian ideologues like Milton Friedman and Charles Murray see the possibility of eliminating publicly funded entitlements in favour of impoverished members of the working class having to […]

Puzzled, the man looked at the boy and asked what he was doing. Without looking up from his task, the boy simply replied, “I’m saving these starfish, Sir.”

The man chuckled.“But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much […]
