Republican Texas State Sen. Paul Bettencourt opposes a guaranteed income program for Harris County residents. The COVID-19 pandemic instigated a resurgence of government-funded income subsidies in the form of stimulus checks to hundreds of millions of Americans. But these programs were short-lived and didn’t have the long-term impact of other universal basic income programs. Some localities in the aftermath of the pandemic have started offering guaranteed income programs, which are under fire by Republicans who call them government handouts.
