The Transition to Renewable Energy: The Shift from Carrots to Sticks

Dr James Crosby-Wrigley highlights the commitment of Scotland to become a more environmentally sustainable economy. A crucial aspect of this transition is encouraging commercial entities to become more self-sufficient through the adoption of renewable energy technologies, such as solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.

To incentivize the adoption of renewable generators, various economic measures were introduced. These include the Feed-In-Tariff, which provided guaranteed income for generators, tax incentives like the tax super-deduction, and grants funded by the European Union through local authorities.
