From January 2017, a random sample of 2,000 unemployed people aged 25 to 58 were paid an unconditional monthly stipend of 560 euros (US$637). In order not to discourage job searches, the same stipend would continue even if a recipient found a job. After two years the experiment ended. To the disappointment of the proponents of the scheme, the government decided not to continue with funding further experimentation.
