A new report on universal basic income (UBI) questions whether the system can achieve its aim of alleviating poverty and reducing inequality.
The New Economics Foundation think tank argues that the project cannot be both affordable and effective.
It cited figures suggesting that UBI funding would cost between 20% and 30% of most countries’ GDP. Such a large rebalancing would ultimately divert funds from social programs like public housing or health care, the report said.
